The dreaded 9093 error, M Box fried somehow???

Hello, this is my first post here, if it's the wrong forum please move and all that.

I'll try to keep this brief, but I'm pretty certain I won't. Apologies in advance.

So I've been running ProTools LE 7 with an M Box 2 on my ThinkPad laptop for a while now without any real problems (despite expecting them). I recently had to trade mine in for a basically identical model (school-issued... if you choose to buy the thing they make you give it back and give you another. Don't ask me why). I get the new one and install ProTools again. I don't record anything new onto it, but I do open a rather elaborate session and manage to remix the song without any trouble at all.

A couple days later I hook up my new electronic drumset to the M Box. The drum module is an Alesis DM5, which I had no problem with while setting up. However, I run one of the stereo outs (only one, as I was just testing at this point to make sure something would come through) into the TRS in the first input of the M Box. I'm able to record for a few seconds before I get the classic 9093 error. I then proceed to try every different method of communicating between the drums and the M Box; running out of the AUX outputs, running into the direct in line, even running it through the headphone jack of the Alesis and into the M Box. Same error.

So I start plugging mics into the M Box and continue getting the same error. It's simply not recording for more than a couple seconds (if that) before giving me the error. I reinstalled ProTools several times with no luck, I even tried installing it on another (practically identical) laptop with the same error message (this time the Alesis never touched the set up at all). I found numerous possible fixes online, but nothing I've tried so far as worked.

So my questions are

1.) Is it possible that the drum module could've damaged the M Box somehow? If so, does Digi (or anyone else) repair them?

2.) Is there something I'm doing wrong when it comes to connecting the devices? If it IS my box, and if I DO get it repaired, am I basically just going to have the same problem all over again?

I've managed to run other devices into the box without trouble, though admittedly nothing as elaborate as a full electronic drumset. I've considered doing a total reformatting of my drive, but since I experienced the same problem on a completely different laptop it leads me to believe it wouldn't make any difference.

If I should give more specs on my laptop and/or what fixes I tried please let me know and I'll do the best I can to explain.

Sorry for the length. Any help is massively appreciated... it's killing me to be sitting on my hands when I could be working on these things.

Sorry to state the obvious, but even though it might look the same it may not have the same mainboard, controller chipsets, hard drive speeds, ram speed or is it the same windows service pack, correct pace drivers...the list goes on.

You mentioned you hadn't recorded anything on this new PC but had been able to play a session back? Have you been able to successfully record yet on this PC? Does playing back sessions still work?

I seriously doubt your mbox is fried. I had a plethora of errors when I upgraded to my new pc, but after googling the exact errors and finding out some weird stuff I got it working after a day or two. I immediately thought I'd bought an incompatible motherboard or something else...start with the basics first.

I'm running ProTools LE7 with an MBox 2.

In response to your questions, yes, at first I had no trouble at all playing back and bouncing out tracks in ProTools. However, I had not tried recording at this point, so I'm not sure what would've happened had I done so. It wasn't until I attempted to record the electronic drums that I encountered this error after just a couple seconds of successful recording:

"The operating system held off interrupts for too long. If this occurs often, try increasing the 'H/W Buffer Size' in the Playback Engine Dialog. (-9093)"

Afterwards this is the only response I receive when trying to play back OR record (at most ProTools will play back for a few seconds before erroring out again). As you might expect, raising the buffer size simply gives me this error:

"Audio processing is conflicting with other CPU tasks. If this occurs often, reducing the 'H/W Buffer Size' in the Playback Engine Dialog may help prevent the problem. (-9129)."

I have visited the Digidesign help site as well as some other forums and tried the following potential fixes:

- Disabling ClearType Font Smoothing

- Updating the Intel Ultra ATA storage controller to the Standard Dual PCI IDE controller.

- Setting the drive to operate in DMA mode when available.

- Creating a new hardware profile.

- Disabling device drivers.

None of these seemed to help at all.

Either way, could you try using a different port just to humor me? I have this thing on my firewire card where 3 of the four ports will give me that 9093 error, but one doesn't. I won't even tell you how long that took me to work out. I'll check out some of the other specs you posted up when I get a sec tomorrow

Connected via onboard usb, yes.

I saw this mentioned somewhere else and gave it a try with no luck. I just tried each port again just to be sure, same error.
 
A few things

Do you have another computer (friends or otherwise) to test the mbox still works? I mean, it is not likely it got damaged, but just to be thorough and rule that out.

I can't find anywhere on the digidesign website where the Thinkpad R60 is supported. This doesn't mean it won't work, it isn't however a good start. They support the r40 and r50, so maybe they just haven't caught up yet. Never the less I noticed your laptop uses a legend usb chipset. I've never heard of that, the chipset's generally recommended are NEC or Texas Instruments. In saying that, I've got a really cheap dodgy firewire card running my 002 at the moment that doesn't have those chipsets, however I did have to go through about 5 or 6 pci firewire cards I had squirreled away before I got one that worked.



Also have you downloaded the latest pace drivers?

-Below where it says "END USERS" on the right side of the page, there is a 'Download Drivers' drop down menu
-Click on the menu and select 'Mac OS X Extensions'
-This should start downloading 'macextsx.dmg'
-Once this file is downloaded, double click on 'macextsx.dmg'
-This should bring up a temporary disk called 'InterLok Extensions Installer'
-Open the 'InterLok Extensions Installer' disk, and double-click 'InterLok Extensions Install'
-Proceed through the installation
-Restart your computer when installation has finished

I actually just got it working today. I installed another version of ProTools (7.3) and it worked flawlessly. This could very well have the result of having outdated drivers.

By the way, if you're still curious, I did actually try it on another computer and received the same error with the same box.

Odd that the R60 isn't supported. I ran PT fine on an R60 since last fall. In truth, I was surprised from the start that my laptop supported PT so well, I was expecting massive trouble and, other than this, it's been fine despite some fairly elaborate projects.

I'll keep an eye on those pace drivers as well. Knowing about that could save me a lot of trouble down the road.
