Kind of a mixture of styles. I wrote this song a while back and never recorded it properly. Super basic but still has a groove. Let me know what you think. I do all the parts.

There is the basis of a nice easy listening blues song here. The vocal doesn't sound bad, but is mixed off over a mountain somewhere. I think you could bring it forward. The song is a bit lyrically lazy, so most of it is a wailing lead guitar without much purpose.

I would write more lyrics, bring them forward, and cut down on the meandering guitar.

For my taste, the lead guitar is too heavy on the reverb. Lyrically, there's not much there, certainly no 'hook'.

I like what you've done with the vocal. Maybe a bit too much verb on the solo guitar?

the snare really sticks out in the mix, it's a bit too forward and dry sounding. I personally like the guitar but think the vocals should still be a bit more forward, apart from that liked it.

I said it was a simplistic song. I wrote it that way. I am certainly not going to write "more" lyrics. Are you serious? Not every song has to be "the Edmond Fitzgerald" I feel there IS a purpose to the solos. I thought this was to critic mix and not songwriting and playing abilities. There are other sections for that. Man.....if you dislike it as a song, then keep it to yourself. If you have something to suggest to improve the mix of my original song, then I'm all ears. You are basically telling me to re-write the damn thing.

Again with the lyrics.....oh and a cheap shot at "no hook" ....ya thanks for that. What's funny is I clicked your video link and listened to the song, out of meter and out of key singing. The basics. Perhaps you should cover the basics before you spew your negative crap.

Finally, something constructive. Thanks Dobro

I am a guitar player so I have probably put too much reverb on the guitar. I wanted it to stand out and scream a little. I also play the bass, drums, keys, guitars and vocals. I wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered the song so it can be a little overwhelming. I kind of like the raw power this simple song has. I have 100's of originals, some are quite complex. This one wasn't meant to be complex.

Thanks for the reply Btyre. I felt the kit was too dry too. I intend to fatten it up on the next mix down. You're the first to suggest louder vocals. haha...I hate my voice so maybe I subconsciously mix it low.

---------- Update ----------

I also liked the reverb on the guitar!

me too!!! thanks for that Robbie

I didn't mind the vocals. I thought the lead (and its effects) was fine. It suits that style. I didn't even mind the drier snare. I did miss hearing a kick, and the bass was hard to distinguish.

I didn't pay too much attention to the lyrics, but they had the right kind of sound for the song.

However, if you want your ego stroked, the MP3 clinic is not a good place to be. People will comment on whatever strikes them. Obviously some people have felt the lyrics to be wanting in some way strongly enough to warrant their commenting upon them.

You may not have been interested in comments about lyrics, but nevertheless they are worth considering, even if you later dismiss them.

Thanks and no, I am not looking for ego strokes. I've been around a long time and have a serious music career. I certainly don't need praise. I was hoping for constructive suggestions about the mix....which is EXACTLY what this section is for. I expected the posters to stay within the context of the section. I guess its a free for all where people can slag others writing and playing skills anywhere on the site. Am I wrong? or is this the section for blasting peoples lyrics and playing styles? ...and what makes it worse is the source of such attacks. They are certainly not in a position to tell me how to write my lyrics or play my guitar OR what a song lyric means. I even FORWARNED that the song was written "SUPER SIMPLE"

sad that people feel the need to cut others down for their art....and that's exactly what they did.

Geez, you're sensitive. Get over it. There are all sorts of people here, and no they don't all play by the rules. For example, MaryJaneBleedingPhotos often posts stuff that's somewhere on the negative to useless scale, or maybe he's having a bad full moon week - ignore it. Same with some others. Stick around long enough to learn the site - learn who knows what they're talking about and what they're hearing, and who's just being a prat. You get all indignant, you lose. You kick back and filter the junk from the good wine, you get ideas that help your mix. Simple.

Dobro, maybe you are the type that let others walk all over you without a peep. I am not. They want to enter the wrong section and put down a members writing and playing skills when it is CLEARLY not the intention of the forum. I'm not going to run to the mods and report it./ I confront it head on...and you think this is too sensitive? no, it's called standing up to asshats. Is this site even moderated? If not, I'm out of here so don't worry. It's unlikely I will post a song here again. Too many assholes.

You feel peeps been walking all over you? Wow. They haven't been walking all over you. They don't even know you. Look, morons have moronic opinions and this site allows morons. This site also has good people who will help you if you learn how to listen. All you need to do is grow a skin. That's how to stand up to asshats.

well, I have to agree about the morons. :p

I would have stood up for *anyone* (you included) whether I know them or not, if I read this thread and saw them cutting down another member for his song writing, lyrics and playing. It's BS and I don't put up with BS.

I have posted here a number of times over the years. I don't post much but I do like to read up on recording technics and such. I am well aware that there are good people here but I am now aware there are asshats that need to be reminded that's it's not cool to cut down someone's art. I don't understand what part of that has to do with thick skin. They are clearly in the wrong and I called them on it. They should be the ones explaining their actions....*not* me

Capish?

Oh, I understand how you feel. I just don't think it's worth it.

BuzzHaze,

On this site there are a few more things you can do to complement something. You can "thank" people for their posts, and give them rep, and I gave you both. So I guess I am a moron :)

I also said I thought you had the elements of a good song.

Sometimes I focus on the technical, and sometimes I focus on the construction of the song. Technically I thought you could bring the vocal forward, which most singers would find complimentary. I also suggested more song and less lead because I would find that more engaging... and thought it was good advice... not because I wanted to slag you off.

Oh I see, so you can attack a members playing and writing as long as you "thank" them??? give me a break. Saying I had the basis of a nice easy listening song followed by "lyrically lazy" and "meandering lead guitar without much purpose" hardly makes it a mix critic. That's called judging someone's playing and writing skill.

You seem to focus on being a negative asshat who thinks he can sling insults as long as they are thinly veiled with a compliment. Piss off Tobe
