instead of using a figure 8 mic I used two cardiods as crawdad asked about

they were 2 414's about 4 " apart for the " S " mic(s) with a CAD VX-2 as the normal " M " mic

It gets a little phasey, but the stereo imaging is GREAT!

here is the link
the song's called " Crawdad technique "

get ready to buy the " Crawdad Blue Pincher Matrix Decoder Unit "
:)

I'm laughin' pipeline! Thanks for posting that audio. It is WIDE! and it stays intact when you play it in mono. Also, thanks for answering my question. I've heard this done on acoustic guitar and its awesome, but I've not tried it yet. Gee, as a matter of fact, Crawdad has never used the "Crawdad technique"!

'Crawdad Blue Pincher Matrix Decoder Unit?" Hmmm...better get Chessrock on the phone! lets see...if we could merge this technology with tube exciters and some reverse engineered aspects of the Infector, we might open up an entire new vista of sonic potential! I think the name has to be longer, though and sound more esoteric and important.

Maybe "Crawdad Azure Pincher Tubbessent Exciter and Intraharmonic Modulation Phase Inductor and Extrapolator, MK V" Yeah....

yeah... the CAPTE and the IMPIE MK V.... not to be confused with the IMPIE MK IV or VI... which used a recoiling phase inverter instead of the inductor.

They were on an imaginary centerline of the kick and snare, in front ( audience side ) and about 2 feet above and 1 foot in front of the center cymbal. The center cymbal is louder than the rest tho, so I gotta either lower it or pick somewhere else to stick the mics...just an experiment, but I bet theres a way to do this right

How bout from behind the drummer.. Thats what I've done in the past, and it worked OK. I've seen this done at a local studio too, but they suck.

I don't know anything about crawdad's technique..............I just want to post my new avatar, courtesy of...............hiccup!.....who?

do you get out a tape measure for the mic placements? Just curious. I just place em and then move em around until I get the sound I want, never to find it again......

nah, not for M/S, or crawdad modified M/S...what would you measure really ?

for coincident pair, and spced pair and XY you could bust out the tape measure ( or the mic cord with the kink in it ! :) )

not that I'll ever find the same spot again either ...

thanks for giving me something else to be nuerotic about :)
