IT PAYS OFF IN THE END, ESCPECIALLY WHEN RECORDING. I CHANGE MINE THE DAY BEFORE A SESSION AND IT REALLY ISNT THAT BAD GUYS, I MEAN, GET INTO THE HABIT OF IT AND IT IS EASY AFTER A COUPLE OF TIMES. SAVES YOUR FINGERS TOO. EVER TRY TO PLAY WITH STRINGS THAT FEEL LIKE BARBED WIRE? FUCKIN HURTS MAN!

Gotta disagree,I used to use one but after awhile it would go to hell and on some strings you'd need two or three "clips" to get through.

Get a real cutter!

Yeah, they do wear out pretty quick.I buy them in packs of 2 from the dollar store.:D

I'll have to disagree with the "do it more often, you'll get better at it" and the "make a habit of it" camps. To me, it's like eating peas. I hate them. Will never like them. Don't have to like them. Same for strings. I've been playing for 20 yrs and I still hate changing them. I am quick.. hell, I've changed a string between the 1st verse and the 2nd chorus and was up and going just in time to do the solo at a gig once.

I do have a great gizmo that works better than a peg winder these days though... it's called a great guitar tech. Once every other month or so, he changes my strings, intonates, polishes, cleans out dust on the inside, puts some epoxy in the dings and buffs it out.. all for $25 and that includes an extra set of strings. Well worth it.

Dude you are missing out on some quality bonding time with your instrument.:D

that's what practice is for.

actually, it's in the best health interests of the insturments that I not work on them. I have very little tolerance sometimes and I wouldn't want to do something I would regret. Words can hurt, but a pair of pliers in anger can hurt even worse.

I love changing strings. There's nothing better than getting the grime off the fretboard and sloppin on some guitar honey....and cleaning the dust under the strings is always a good feeling. the best part is that when you get it all back together it feels sooooo good...it's almost a shame to play it :)

The actual string change itself only takes me about 4-5 minutes, then maybe a minute or two to stretch the strings. But I probably spend a good 20 minutes working the fretboard. My hands really sweat so there's often a large buildup of gunk.

I like peas, and love changing strings. I also polish my boots for fun.

The peg winder is the most useless thing I ever bought.

I've never bought one. Never will. If I really needed to wind strings that fast i'd buy a winder bit for my drill.

Gotta agree with JR. It's such a pain to change strings. To me it's a means to an end. The only reason I tech my own guitar is because I trust myself more than the local techs.

I do (finally) have a tech I trust more than myself. However, he's an hour away. Thus, it takes four hours of travelling to have my guitar teched: two round trip to drop off and two to pick up. Also, he charges $85 for basic set up. He's awesome, but he only gets my major jobs.

I love changing strings. I like setting my intonation. Sometimes I do it for my friends because I like to and they don't.

(And they are at my house to record and haven't done it yet)

ya friggin crybabies.....

I have 15 guitars, two of which are 12 strings. I assure you a gal you give a new wardrobe to looks and plays better.
