With my old computer using cool edit and windows ME, I used to shut down everything except for systray and explorer in the task manager. With XP, there are tons of things running in the manager, but what can I shut down? Is it as effective in freeing up memory as it was in ME? People here have been saying that with cool edit and similar processors and less memory than I have, they are running 30 track mixes with many plug ins. I'm getting skipping and crashes when I get up into that territory.

I have an athlon 2800 with 1G of memory.

Look at your processes and google everything you don't recognize. Also, grab a free copy of "adaware 6.0" (or higher) and run it. With your machine, you shouldn't be having those problems with this software.

Thanks, I will. Problem is, this machine isn't even hooked up to the internet and never has been!! I use my old computer for surfing. Anything that I download, I burn to disk and load it from there. I guess I COULD have gotten something from a transferred download, but sheesh.

If you know how to post a screen pic of your running processes, do that...we'll see if we can get it figured out...

This is about the part where dobro would normally say "what does this have to do with CEP?", but we'll try to work fast, lol.

:D Will do when I get home.

Chris I've tried on other forums to get something like this started... On the amazingtechs.com forum the moderators troubleshoot computers for virus with a tool which you download into a new folder..

http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/HijackThis.exe

After scanning you save into txt..

Ok here is a scan of my DAW with sonar going..

Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7

Maybe we can get something going along these lines ..... As you can see here is a "model" for a working system......

People often say http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/winxp.htm is a very good source of info on what should and should not be running when XP is doing nothing. (Not sure if that's the exact page, rummage in that site generally).

Actually I've only just paid it my first visit for 5 secs but bookmarked it right away.
