I think it might be worst than that. The number of metro areas that would need top session players is probably way less than the number of total metro areas.

A big factor in the need for session players is probably recording. Clearly NY, LA, Nashville, and a few others fit this bill. However there are scads of others that are large metro areas that likely have little need.

The comparison to football again comes to mind. There are dozens of teams and each with dozens of very well paid players, many of which make 7 and 8 figure incomes. The odds for making it into the NFL is incredibly small. But there are probably way more NFL players than top session players.

Start with a good education in an employable field. Get some years of experience in that field. Then consider music as a part time thing supported by your professional career.
