The Chair

when I need a chair, I go to a used furniture warehouse. Last time, I got a Steelcase chair, retail 699 USD, for 89 dollars. Took the arms off and have an awesome guitar chair.

But be prepared to make more than one trip. They didn't have one I liked the first time but they get more stuff practically daily. So I went back and found one on my second trip. Don't settle for what's there. I didn't do that when I got my computer chair. Now I use my guitar chair for a computer chair as well. When I eventually get my music room set up in the basement, I'm going to need another chair again.

Well... I'm a big (310 lb) guy. Decided to try a heavy-duty expensive chair (over $500) built for recording.
It was built like a tank and very high-quality. Sadly, I ended up not liking it, and shipped it back.
Lesson learned: try the chair IN PERSON because.... all the ads, testimonials, and videos will not tell you how it feels and operates in real life.

I found myself sliding around on the mesh surface, and (despite being designed for larger people) the adjustable arm rests were a constant pain, and didn't offer enough side-to-side clearance. I was ready to take them off completely, but then I would have needed them on for other tasks. I could never get the correct balance of settings to make the front edge comfortable, and the back rest was more of a nuisance than it should have been. Some people would have thought it perfect... but I did not. I was considering the Herman Miller Aeron chair, but that, too has a mesh surface, which I already know I do not like.
So the search continues.

Your chair search adventure sounds like quite a journey. I totally get the struggle of finding the perfect balance between comfort and affordability. As for that headphone loop, a bit quirky, right? If you're still on the lookout, I found some great options at this place I stumbled upon recently. Just give it a click, and who knows, you might find the ideal work chair that fits your music-making vibes perfectly!

AI makes bots so much more realistic, at least it's good for something. How did they register on this site in the first place? Dragon, do you know?

Well, it's been 6 years and my original chair is still in use, but not for long. The PU leather has cracked a tiny bit on the seat cushion at the front corners, and moreso on the armrest pads. These areas are, of course, where I put the most weight, so it's been expected, though not the reason for replacement.

I replaced the thick foam pad I added in the beginning. That worked well enough, but I was offered a free gel pad last week - the type used in wheelchair seats. This pad is waaaayyy better. . . Very comfortable for extended periods.

Shortly after I scored that gel pad, the dang lift cylinder blew out. I reckon I was cycling the cylinder a minimum of once a day and some days more for a rough guesstimate of 2500 cycles over the past 6 years. Not bad, really. This is cause for chair replacement. I toyed with the idea of replacing the cylinder then decided to go with a new chair.

I'd like to hear from anyone on how their chairs are working out - especially @TalismanRich and @mjbphotos (you still with us? I hope). Chair prices have come down some.

I've been looking at gaming chairs with flip-up arms. Thought it would be cool to add some color (blue) to the space - in the $60-115 price range.

I was wondering how this came up as an alert on the little bell thing.

I've had good luck with this chair:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08PTPLV67/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

3 years and going. The flip up arms are great for when you are sitting down and tracking guitars / bass etc.

My other chair project was recovering the chairs I inherited. The cats absolutely destroyed them, but thanks to Amazon , they look sorta ok again. $15 each for stretchable covers that hide the horrors underneath.

Robin likes them.

I bought a second-hand office chair for my work/computer room years ago.
It cost a bit, has tilt, swivel, and fixed arms.
It was great for a few years, but now the cylinder doesn't work properly.
Hit the lever while the chair is empty, and it pops up as expected.
I sit gingerly on it, then at some later point the seat will suddenly drop.

I have to put a foot on one chair leg and, with lever pulled, grab the seat cushion and pull up - it raises slowly, then sinks quickly when I let go.

I'm still using the chair that I got from Staples. No issues after 4 years. The flip up arms are great for when I am sitting with my guitar. No banging on the rests when I'm grabbing the guitar, and it's comfortable after sitting in it for a couple of hours. It rolls easily on the carpet tiles that I've laid down in the basement. They are firm and smooth and if I wear one down too much, I can easily replace it, as I have a couple extra boxes.

The biggest problem is that I haven't been spending enough time down in the basement.

Chairs are tough. The most awesomeness one is the Xchair. But that is stupid money. I got something around $300 from Office Max with folding arms. It's looking like a gamers chair with blue stripes, but it works. Has the folding up arms and comfortable.

That one don't even have the folding arms tho. But I have other chairs for that.

Someday, I will be rich beyond my beliefs, and have the goodest of stuff!!! LOL

I was about to buy this one from Office Depot for $114 on sale, but when I checked in to buy, it was off sale @ $299 again. Yikes !! Now I'm crawling through Amazon for a similar unit.

Update : Just found this same chair on Amazon for $135. Sweet ! I love it when a plan comes together 8-)

Ya know . . . one thing about desk chairs, even living room recliners (La-Z-Boy, e.g.), the so-called headrests . . . I find them useless. When I sit all the way back and place my head against the rest it feels like I'm twisting my spine out of position. I can get my shoulders firmly back into the cushions, but my head just doesn't want to follow. I'm weird.

In my weeks-long search for a decent work chair from which to make music, and not drain my wallet,
I've waded into the shallow end of $50-$99 offerings. I'll be moving up from a 20.5"H desk with a
footstool as a chair.. to a 29"H requiring a "real" chair, so whatever I get will be much more
comfortable than what I am currently using.

One I have my eye on has an unusual feature.. attached to the side of the backrest is a loop "for headphones"... ?!
Headphones, you say! Well.. that's interesting, but no thanks - for the loop.. I like the chair - not the loop. It must
be for small phones because I can't imagine a regular sized pair of studio phones being easily retrieved - one cup
would always get hooked, preventing one-handed operation.

I like the chair, though!
