anyone a fan of theirs? they have really unique recording strategies and record in the drummers basement, everything they do sounds still sounds really good, i think they record on a tascam 338 or 388 what ever it is. but theys cool.

I've heard a few songs of theirs on the radio and I think they sound exactly like what they are: music recorded on an 8-track in a basement. More power to them for taking that sound and getting airplay and national recognition. The lo-fi thing doesn't seem to fly with most these days.

The label is what kills it. People hear that term and that's all they need.

The fact of the matter is that drastically different recordings can enhance or ruin a bands sound. There's huge possibility for it to do more of the former, but unfortunately, there's not many people out there with the balls to do it, and most minds are closed to even considering it in a legitimate fashion. It's a matter of opinion, but as bands all start to sound the same, so do recordings. I'd be more interested in hearing a 388 recording by some silly white boy blues band than say, anything currently on any major label and recorded professionally. It all just sounds the same to me.

And yeah, as a band, the Black Keys fall a little short for me, but I think that record sounds really really great. Exact same deal I've got with the last few White Stripes LP's.

I'm not saying its good or its bad...I haven't heard enough to make a statement like that. I just think it sounds like what it is, and that style suits their aesthetic well. But you're certainly not going to find anyone who will think that they holed up at Abbey Road for two months to make that record.

I also should mention that I don't know what record the stuff I've heard is from. It was quite recent though, so I'd assume that its their newest material.

It's funny they should be mentioned...I was just listening to an interview with them on the radio on Saturday on my way to the folks' house to watch the game. Only heard a little bit though.
