"From the Article:
"Metallica achieved the primitive sound and schizophrenic vibe of St. Anger by combining old recording technology with cutting-edge editing software. While Rock had previously rigged Lars' kit with multiple modern microphones and dampened the bass drum with pillows, spending as much as a week perfecting a snare sound, this time Rock spent five minutes setting up the drums and recorded the rest of the band with a combination of cheap PA mics and vintage microphones.

With the bare-bones recording equipment in place, Metallica started coming up with riffs together and rocked them out like a group of friends hooking up just to mess around. Once they'd concocted rhythms they liked, they'd combine them and record long jam sessions. Lyrics were written by the entire band moments before a song was recorded, and Hetfield's vocals were recorded in one or two takes to capture the immediacy of the moment, glitches and all.

"There was really no time to get amazing performances out of James," Rock said. "We liked the raw performances. And we didn't do what everyone does and what I've been guilty of for a long time, which is tuning vocals. We just did it, boom, and that was it."

Damn!! I could have given the producer everything he wanted and MORE. Also, for cheaper. Mettalica should have recorded in my studio where his "experiments" are business as usual for me!

Although it would never happen, I'd love to hear a Martin Birch produced Metallica album. He is one of the few that can really pull out a decent metal album.

I'm with you here Cy!

Birch's work with Black Sabbath and with Iron Maiden are some of my favorite metal recordings.

No offense, but this is a pretty silly poll.

Kind of like asking:

"Greatest rock singer/songwriter of all time?: John Lennon or Ronnie James Dio?" :D :D

Sorry, but I'd have to go with Dio in that one. John Lennon's voice always annoyed me.
There was just something about him that I never liked....Oh yeah, it was that ugly thing he was married to....that's it!

Yeah, cause you have to respect anyone who can turn a bad sudo-contry artist into a even worse pop artist.

Her record sales statistics and sold out mega-tours dictate that the majority of the country/pop album customer base disagrees with your statement ;)

Yeh, or greatest white material? Chalk or cheese?

Silly indeed.

BOB ROCK????????

BOB ROCK??!!! Who would even consider him a producer to the damage he put on metallicas new record. Yea they have sucked now for quite a while, but this last cd was 1million times worse than i could have ever expected. When i first heard that crap guitar tone in mono and the tones of everything else I honestly thought my cd player was broken. Seriously if BOB rock wanted to be OUT THERE and make a raw sounding record, he didn''t have to purposly make everything sound like garbage. Come on darkthrones newcd was recorded in 27 hours! If anyone has checked out the new guitar world bobby said that during the recording sometimes they would just let the drum mics pick up the bass amp and thats how it would sound. Why not just record the whole band live. That would sound way better and capture the intensity and rawness but oh yea, lars can't play drums and for bob rocks work on that album he should not be allowed to ever record again. By the way i agree that david bottrill (sorry about the spelling) is great. Diorama is one of my favorite albums of all time. It really captures the moment. These forums are great!

As much as I dislike all of Bob's productions I have heard, you cannot fault him entirely for the shit job he did on Metallica.

Those sell-out fucks are proud of the feces they threw at their fans. If the band didnt like what they heard they wouldve gone with another producer.

the new album from Metallica has definitely kept me from illegally downloading it. Which must have been their intent, cause I can't understand it any other way.
What can you expect from a band that derives it's popularity from rabid fans, and then turns around and sues those same rabid fans for downloading music from their favorite band?

Personally I now boycott anything Metallica does. I change the channel when they are on. And I will never put a single cent into a t-shirt, cd, or concert ticket, that endorses Metallica. This used to be my favorite band, five years ago. Now I hope all their old fans join my boycott. Oi! Oi! Whose with me?

And Bob Rock . . . Don't get me started on Bob Rock . . .

Comparing Bob rock and Sir George is like comparing the Buddha to Barney.

Geezus, don't even put those two in the same sentence...oops, I just did!

Who are the five morons who voted for Bobby Cock?!?!?

They should hang their tiny heads in shame.

Kidding?

Probably kids who have never heard of George Martin.

At least I hope they are!

George Martin - The Beatles

Even without anything else, that is enough. Mutt Lang would not have half the toolkit he has, nor would any other producer or engineer, without George Martin and the Beatles. That is not all, though. He has one more for the advancing of recording as an art than ANYONE. He is, without question, the best.

I would be crazy to argue that GM isn't an amazing producer, and quite arguably the best... my point is--look what he had to work with and when (It was a revolutionary time for recording and music). The Beatles were not exactly talentless. Certainly it's easier to make a great record working with greats. What impresses me about Mutt is he can take a far less talented artist... and still sell A LOT of records.
I don't get to work with "Beatles-Level" talent. That's why I vote for Mutt, he can MAKE talent (or at least record sales  )... with hard work and attention to detail.

OK boys it's time to get flamed, but I can take it. First of all I agree that Martin is great, that is no question, and I also agree that he easily wins in this poll. However there is almost no respect going to the man Bob Rock. With comments like: "BOB ROCK??!!! Who would even consider him a producer", This feels like the playground at my old elementary and Bob Rock is the kid that wore "L.A. Gear" pumps as aposed to the cool kid that wore "Air Jordans". There is no use making him out to be a terrible producer. I too feel that St. Anger is the biggest dissapointment in a long time, I attribute that mostly to the band, because it's still thier album, you can blame the dealer all you want but it's still your kid that smoked the weed ya'know? however there are some very significant things that I praise about it.

The main thing I love is that they thrashed current trendy mixes. At least he had the head to not be caught up in conformity, and the balls to do something about it whether it worked or not. If I hear one more Kornapoppacreedbizkit band I am going to freak. I love that he didn't make them pull out PRS's and Triple Rectifiers! I love that he didn't ask kirk to learn how to rap some background vocals! I love that he didn't turn James into Cher. I love the "idea" of using lo-fi stuff. I think that idea would have been beautiful had they took longer than five minutes to write the bloody songs. How cool would that be to have an album come out that stands on the merits of great song writing and producing, while still being raw and lo-fi, that is where real artists would shine. I don't feel Metallica are not real artists, but I do feel they made a bad mistake. I also like the idea of using pro tools like an instrument. The problem was instead of having a "pro tools virtuoso" we had the equivellent of Richard Simmons playing a Les Paul through a Marshall Stack. If you can't play it either learn how or put it down. All I am saying is that Bob Rock does not suck. The black Album was amazing, and his ideas have merits. They weren't pulled off well lately, but you still must give credit where credit is due. To say he sucks because of St.Anger, is like saying he is the best producer in the world because of the "black album".
