yes
I want you all to post your fav mic and why.

mines the SM57, since you can record just about everything with it.

Man, this is a difficult question. I'd probably say the Oktava MK012 is good. The Blue Dragonfly is an interesting yet versatile mic.

I've seem to be favoring my Oktava's MK012 lately for, congas, shakers, cowbells, guitars, OH, armpit and other sources. I'm now considering getting some Josephson LD, since I use my LD so much I might as well get something a little better.

Hm...

The afor mentioned mics are my two favorites as well.

You guys, I really like the KSM-32. It's very boring and neutral in the high end, but damn, does it ever have a tight bass response.

I'd like to say Electrovoice RE-20, also. It's kind of the same way.

i'm with chessrock, but i like the ksm44 more than the ksm32.
the ksm44 is a very versatile mic, has a lot of presence but remains fairly neutral.
i'm starting to love the Cad M ight now too.. i used mine in a sesion last night.. i can't belive how it sounds.. its kicking my newman tlm193 in the ass... lol last night i used the tlm193 as a talkback mic... ;)

AT 4033. The Swiss army knife of mics.

AKG C2000B. It's my desert island mic. Never bad on anything, and great on lots of things.

As far as mics I own, I too like the Oktava Mk012/Mc012 as an all-around mic. I also like the U87 and 414 as an "everything mic," though neither are always the right vocal mic.

For the kind of stuff I do, my favorite mic that I've used would be the NTK. It's decent on amp, awesome on acoustic, great on vocals, passable on hand perceussion, amazing on cello, pretty good as a mono drum overhead.

My next choice would be the Oktava. It's an amazing drum overhead and a great acoustic mic. Never tried it on vocals, though.

I would say the AT4050, but I really wouldn't feel secure in dropping it on the ground. For that reason I would go with the SM-57. Sounds great, very durable!

Beyerdynamic M200N(C) because it's the only one I have!

rpe

If I could have only one mic (of the 50 or so in my studio) it would have to be the Brauner Valvet BE. I have yet to find anything it didn't record extremely well. There might be mics which would be a bit better on one or 2 specific instruments/voices - but none which do as well on everything.

The most important thing is microphone placement, quality of the pre-amp, and the compressor if used (both in terms of how well you use the compressor, and how good the machine is) above all else. Even the best microphone won't sound right if you are not using your compressor correctly, or if your mic pre-amps suck.

That said I've tried a number of mikes but in a limited environment. Most were in the mic try-out room in a music store. But when mikes that your have known and loved for years are there, it's easy to talk into your mike and then go compare it to one of the mikes next to it.

I own (among other "lesser mikes" that don't count) some SM 57s and an AT 4033. The SM 57s work great on amplifiers, and do very well on vocals and even acoustic guitars.

The AT 4033 is just a gorgeous microphone for vocals, or almost any acoustic instruments. Just make sure you have a wind-guard! It was a little harsh on the dulcimer, but I was able to fix it with some compression and a little EQ cut. I was astonished at how well it reproduced the stand-up base. It does great for both high end, and low end frequencies.
