The Best Free VST's

I am a bit of a n00b with Midi but I love playing around with it at the moment. I am just looking for your favourite free VST's that you guys use... Any pointers?

For VST effects I recommend the Kjaerhus Classic series - separate delay, reverb, chorus, phaser, flanger, compresser, limiter and eq - and they're all free. The SIR_1008 Reverb is not to be missed either. It's a free convolution reverb that sounds every bit as good as a commercial product.

For VSTi's, start with Triangle II, Synth One, and Free Alpha. Then add Superwave 8, Karma Killer and Texture and you've got most of the synth bases covered for free.

So how would I go about getting a piano or violin or something.

Do a search at KVR. The way to do a search is to click on the second entry in the left column of the home page where it says 'instruments effects hosts etc.' and that will take you into the search area. From there you can choose your platform, VST fx or VSTi, free or commercial, and so on.

If I was looking for those two instruments I would probably search for a soundfont player. But that's just me.

That's helped a lot matey. I am now wondering what sort of instrument I should be looking for when I want something to make background swirly sounds. That doesn't help you much does it - I am looking for sounds that can just plug the background a bit so it doesn't sound so empty.

Do a search for 'Texture' at KVR. The same company puts out a bigger version too that's called 'Motion' that's freeware/shareware too, but I have yet to try that one. It's rumored to be a CPU hog...

What you will definitely want to check out is Crystal by Green Oak Audio . It will require some twiddling until you get the hang of it but the beuty of it, IMHO, is the HUGE possibilities to modulate practically anything with practically anything.

Another personal fave of mine is Motion from Ugo (don't have the url handy, sorry). You'll find the link from KVR.
