The best 8-track home recording?

I got to throw this question out there on what is the best piece of 8-track recording equipment out there at the moment? The equipment needs to have its own hard-drive storgae area, very low noise characteristics, good editing software and most it must be easy to use.

Another cheaper option is to probably use a high-quality mixer and take a single output into the PC, i.e. hope you get your mixing levels right and record it on a PC as a single track (which obviously will not allow you bring up or down seperate channels once you have the single mix).
 
You might check out the Yam 1600 unit. A while back I found a PDF file with a 101 type to understand "simple" things to do when recording "correctly."

One thing about the Yam, I can burn a "full" CD in about 17 minutes and do as many copies as I need for my illustrious friends.

Unit runs about 1K with/without tax depending on where you buy.

BTW A while back, I had a lightning strike that fried my Yam 1600=DEAD.

I happened to check my insurance form and "it was covered" all but 100 bucks; thus, I got a new unit to replace the fried unit. I just have that kind of luck.

But, it's a great unit--maybe not as much editing in a stand alone; however, it does a great job.

I've always been a fan of the Boss BR series. I learned to record (for the most part) on a BR-1180CD, which had pretty decent sounding pre's and loads and loads of functionality, with a much more intuitive interface than the other studio-in-a-box units I've used. Only downside was it only had 2 inputs, but the 1600 has 8 inputs on it. Also they're a bit more expensive than other all-in-one units, but they're well worth it IMO.
 
When I started out I was looking at a 12 track recorder, and someone I respected said to go for a 16 track because you will use them all and want more! With that said, I went for the KorgD1600MKII, easy to use with the touch screen, and a great on-line support group. I still use the Korg, but go in digital and bypass everything on the Korg, the pre-amps, effects, and converters with outboard gear. I use the Korg like a mixer, and having a ball.
