the bass line from hell and how to manage to include your central heating in a track

Hola kids,

Some just can't get enough....

I hereby submit another track for review for those kind souls who have time to give it a lesson, and hopefully some critique.

At http://mp3.com/ulcerate you'll find my new track "Drift". It's another electronic/alternative/industrial rock hybrid track from my project Ulcerate.

Gear used:

Epi Les Paul
Hartke 5-string bass
Line 6 POD v2 & Bass Pod
Line 6 DL-4
Behringer micromixer
Rode NT-1 Mic
PC w/ SB Live
Software: Cool Edit Pro, Waves & Hyperprism dx plugins
Percussion samples & loops
and....my central heating system! (it's actually the thing that sounds like electro-percussion that runs throughout the tune)

As mentioned, looking for feedback/constructive criticism. This place is a blessing for it....hope it continues to be a good sounding board for my creations :)

Cheers

Wow, sounds like "Souxie and the Banshees Get Modern." Not my style of music, forgive me if I don't offer anything... (except the MP3 is HOT, like distorted all over the place. this whole arbitrary encoding thing is PISSING ME OFF (see related thread that nobody else reads....))

:D

hah!

The Banshees comment gave me a giggle, seeing I hate that band with a passion. Oh well....guess I finally made it to "sad old goth" status without really trying. Now where's that Sisters Of Mercy album I have around here somewhere ? :)

As to the distortion.....should have mentioned that it's actually intentional. Should have mentioned in the orginal post. I tend to like some "grunging" on vocals and drums. As this track probably sits in the Alternative/Industrial rock vein along with most of my stuff, it's pretty much in tune with the genre. One of those cliches I can't seem to tear myself away from...

Thanks for listening....much appreciated.

geez....see what you mean about distorted. The file I uploaded does not sound like that! MP3.com still sees reason to re-encode files once they get them - and screw them up!.

Therefore, I've taken the file offline and made some touch-ups myself by compressing the thing into a state that mp3.com can't screw up the file again. It takes away some of the dynamics on the track, but the quality in it's current state on there is unacceptable.

Hopefully they should have the new version live in the next day or so. Will post when it's back online.

Thanks again.

I listened to Drift. It has a good mood although it does, well, drift a bit. I didn't hear any distortion so it looks like you fixed that. I think the drums should come in and out earlier and be a little sharper and more out front. I liked it though.

Dude this is great. Seriously...very nice combinations of sound. The only distortion I'm hearing is on the feedbacky guitar thing but I assume that's intentional...well it sounds intentional anyhow.

Haha I love when the song kicks at 2:48...I knew that repeating backwards sample was going to lead into something. Everything gets all muddy during this loud part, but perhaps it's a good thing.

My only negative comment is that the recording is very edgy...it kind of wants to trance but there's a sort of fingernails on a chalkboard nastiness to it. Now that may have been very well what you intended...and it's not something that can be fixed anyhow....so maybe you can just ignore this comment :) Oh, and there seems to be a lot of background hiss...what do you record on?

Good job, I enjoyed this!

Cheers Slackster & Slim,

appreciate you taking time to check out the track.

To answer your question Slack...recording is basically everything with strings on it ends up going thru either a guitar or bass pod (sometimes a sansamp but not on this track I think), then maybe into a Line 6 DL-4 unit, followed by my Behringer little mixer then into the SB Live. The final piece of the puzzle may be the source of the hiss. This is the next upgrade piece of the studio. Also, mp3z at 128kbps aren't exactly super-great quality, so I'm actually guessing the hiss is in the encode.

Oh yeah...the feedbacky thing is my trusty ebow for those interested :)

Glad you liked the result. Have some new stuff in the can and will post on here for feedback as usual.

Thanks again,

Simon
