How do i mix feedback in a song? its driving me insane. something like Sonic Youth does.

how would you record feedback to start with? any techniques i could try?

You need a guitar and an amp. Mic it up like you would to record it normally. With sufficiant gain on the amp you can manuver the guitar in and out and right on the edge of the "spot" where the guitar will light up and start feeding back.

The question should be how do I get rid of feedback?
I crank mine up so loud that I cant get within 10 feet without it feeding back...
thats why I put my amp in another room and close the door.
But anyways that wont help you.
I have had very good results doing what Track Rat has done.

The band needs to learn how to produce good sounding feedback...it's not a trick, it's a style of its own. If it sounds good in the room, you should be able to capture it without much difficulty.

any tricks to it while mixing it? delay? reverb?

having hard time mixing it thou the songs.

i generally keep it dry, maybe a low cut for boomy feedback spots, but if I get that ill usually just do it over.

Once in the beginning of a song i used three different feedback tracks all with a very spacious reverb. By manuvering the guitar you can make all kinds of sounds.

Stick your amp at the bottom of a staircase pointed up. Close-mic it with a 57 or whatever else you prefer, and place another condenser at the top of the stairs. Pan hard Right and Left. Pretty cool.

I still don't get what the problem is.

Plug the guitar into an amp, get the sound you want, and while tracking the sound, keep the player close enough to the amp so that they may bring the guitar close enough to produce feedback when desired.

I don't really know of ANY way to produce feedback later. Feedback is a "loop" between a speaker and a pickup/microphone. It is usually very narrow band.

... or even the acoustic feedback between your speaker and the body/neck/strings of your guitar...
