Who is the all time greatest guitar player ever? I am sure their has beeen posts like this but none that i have been here for

i am new so give me a break..... i want to know .. i think it is van halen.... he come up with so many new guitar tricks. he also used a lot of tricks and used them well. or Gary howe or however you spell it... anyone heard of him?

To me, there is no greatest guitar player. All of them were special and brought something to the table as far as talent and innovation. Too many genres, too many different approaches. It's tough to really call that one. Not only that, but if you have 100 posts in this thread, you're going to get 100 different answers. To me, they are all great...

you're kidding, right?

Why do you want to know?

This is in no way meant to put you down, but usually when someone tells me so-and-so is the best, it's because they haven't really been exposed to many of the other incredible artists out there.

Maybe you're post should be asking:

Who are SOME of your FAVORITE guitarists?

Have you ever listened to the likes of Andre Segovia, Django Reinhardt, Danny Gatton, Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhodes (just to name a small few) etc, etc, etc?

Eddie Van Halen is an awesome player, don't get me wrong, I guess all I'm trying to say is if you want to be as good as him one day, or even better, then you should broaden your horizons and listen to as many of 'the best' players you can find.

To Rokket

Rokket, We actually were typing at the same time. Funny thing is I thought you put it better. Cheers, Rez

BTW- I really dig your quote:

"Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people."

I guess between the two of us, we got the point across, the job is done.

Yeah, I'm not sure who said it first (I was told maybe Ellenore Roosevelt), but I used it on my wife the other day when she was gossiping on the phone and it made her hang up!!!! :D

That would definitely have to be Eric Idol, he played acoustic guitar for a band called Monty Python back in the 70s. :D
