I feel dumb asking this quesiton, but its very interesting to me and other synth users. I hear funk guitars and I want to know how to achieve that "Wakul Wakul" "Waaw" 70's sound that I hear guitarist playing on funky riffs... using a keyboard. I have included links to 2 quick EXAMPLES at the bottom of this post if you dont know what I mean or are crying laughing at my expression, LOL. I have a Korg Triton and I have plugins galore on my PC. I wonder if there is a plugin or patch that will help fellow synth users like myself get that funky guitarist "Waakul Waakul Waaw" plucking without having a guitarist play them for us. I wish I had a guitarist I could hire, but now a sample CD is all I have close to getting that classic funk sound you hear on all the George Clinton records. What is this method called by the way? Im pretty sure there is a guitar term for it. Thanks

I believe that's called an 'auto-wah' or 'envelope filter'. It's a type of effect (clinton used a mutronIII, and more recently a qtron pedal) that guitarists and bassists use. If you want to use it with a keyboard, try using a clean guitar style patch through one of the pedals I mentioned, or an auto-wah plugin. the "Wakul" as you called it is made by strumming a mutted chord twice quickly, and the "Waaw" by letting a chord ring. I don't have a synthesizer so I'll leave it up to you to figure out the details.

Isn't this about where rats would post a composite of GW Bush's face with Bill Clinton's?

I tried to find such a masterpiece to post it myself, but alas, could not.

Can anyone else share info on using those mutted chords to get that Wakul sound using a synth or plugin??

I think it should be fairly easy to find a wah plug-in effect. It's just a freaking tone control, why should it be that hard to emulate digitally?

What will be hard is to get a synth guitar sound to sound like it's being played by a real guitarist.

You might be able to find loops made of real guitars playing funk figures; that might give you a more realistic-sounding result.

The wah is controlled by the volume when using and envelope filter or an auto-wah (or the great Boss T-Wah)

I do not think the problem will be getting the effect to work right with a keyboard... that should be easy for someone who knows how to use plugs and effects, the problem is going to be getting the guitar sound.

When you make that sound there is a lot of muted strings involved and I just do not think you will be able to emulate on keys.

Buy a guitar and an envelope filter.

Exactly, but the triton has a patch called "Vox Wah Chicks" which sound like those muted chords, they make that "Wakul Wakul" chucking sound but it doesnt make the WAaaaw. Do you think maybe I could just use that patch to get the chucks and use another regular guitar patch to get that WAaaaw with an auto-wah plugin? I have the UltraFunk Sonitus plugin with an auto-wah on it. Keep the tips coming. Thanks!

Some things just can't be done digitally.

I think you just found another one.

Get a MutronIII and run your keys through it. Works fucking great on Clavinet sounds, too.

C-7th NAILED it!!!!
