So many questions... :)

Sure, but you might not be able to load them directly under Cubase... in that case you need to use the SOund FOnt Manager applet that comes with the AWE.

How do you have the mic plugged in? Are you preamplifying it first? You need to. The card has a really awful mic pre in it and will probably sound bad.

Layla ;) ... sorry, just kidding... there are many, in all price ranges. The Delta series by M-Audio are pretty good, and they have a new one that lists for about $200. Echo has two cheaper cards, the Darla and Gina. Gadget Labs has several models. There's many under $500. Note that if you want a card with a MIDI synth on board like the AWE, there aren't many of very high quality. The SB Live is pretty decent considering it's under $100; ditto the Turtle Beach Montego II. Search through all the posts here; there's tons of dialog, discussions, debates, diatribes (these are the words with a d this time...)

Soundcards

Actually I got with a two-card approach. I use the SBLive for MIDI stuff since the ability to use soundfonts is great, but I do all analog audio (miking guitar amps, vocals, etc.) through a Darla24. I have a little Mackie 1202VLZ that I patch everything through, but the approach works for me.

The hiss you are talking about could very well be the noisy mic preamp on the SBLive, you should use the "Line in" instead and use either a mixer or some other standalone preamp (like the ART one).

I end up getting a lot of background environmental noise in my recordings, but I use the noise reduction and noise gate in SoundForge (integrates nicely with Cakewalk) to clean up the audio files. It pretty much gets rid of the hum of the AC and computers, an important consideration when your control room and recording room are one in the same.

There's a new version of Cubase ( 5.0, I believe ) which makes it really easy to load soundfonts. I was using Cubase as well and had to give up on it as I couldn't use soundfonts with it either.
