lol. Beeeeeeyatch pleez. I originally had it louder in the mix, but Ido wanted it more subdued. It's his track, and we all have a say in this thing, so I obliged his wishes. I think it's fine. Everyone involved seems pleased with it.
 
The lead is a little quiet but it isn't too much of an issue. I wish I had something constrictive to say, but everything sounds terrific. You guys know your shit :D

Thanks for the positives though. I'm rather keen on where the lead is now as it plays an integral part all the way through.

Rob, inspiration, primarily: the Evelyn Waugh novel The Loved One. A principal character is Aimee Thanatogenous, (lit. Friend Death or Beloved of the Tribe of Death depending on your source), and the novel is about euphemisms etc and the American way of Death. I'll have to chase up the movie.

Thanks Ray - I've not read that Evelyn Waugh novel - in fact, I don't think I've read any Evelyn Waugh. I wouldn't worry too much about doing a net search on thanatogenous - it just brings up p0rn for some reason. Bizarre...
 
I think the musianship is great, as is the song. Especially like the vocals and the the arrangement.
OK... that gushing aside... are you guys hearing any low end? I'm too lazy to scope this out, but it sounds heavily rolled off at 80Htz or so.. I can certainly hear the kick and the bass... and now I know the problems. Mixed by the drummer, the kick is fine, but the bass gtr was scooped to make room for it. The rhy gtrs are all mid range too. Stuff could be panned wider, but that's a preference, mainly to keep all the middle range stuff that is happening, from stacking on top of each other.
Vocals are loud enough, but don't have the definition, partially because of the performance of the instruments, I suppose. No way to hear subtleness, in this aggresive song.
Good stuff though. If I paid for this as a mastered version, I'd want my money back though. This is what it sounds like before mastering, in my opinion.

This is all mostly true. I did roll a bunch off of everything because it's like a thousand tracks all stacking up on each other - and I even left a bunch of stuff out all together. Could I have spent more time fine tuning each track? Probably. But it sounds good in the car and on my monitors and the guys seemed to be happy with it, so it's good enough. It's also stuff tracked by 4 different guys in 4 different corners of the world thrown into a pile. It is what it is. The low end seems mostly fine to me. Maybe Ray will let you have a crack at mixing it if you can do better. I'd love to hear it. This also isn't "mastered". I threw a limiter on it at the end, but I'd hardly call that mastering. It's getting professionally mastered by someone else.
 
I was just giving some honest feedback and did not mean to undermine your great efforts. No excuses needed from you as it is very good as it stands. I offer constructive critisizm, as I have read that seems to usually be your preference and I don't just slam something for "slamming's sake". That does no one any good. Mixing can be very tough and this song I thought offers a lot of challanges, as there is much fighting for space in this mix.... something that isn't always an easy task to overcome. My suggestions I might guess are things you already know, but was offering a fresh ear and another perspective. My apologies if I came off rude or abusive.
As far as trying to mix it myself... I'll pass as my plate is more than full enough, but I do enjoy listening to others and hopefully can add constructive input. Your stuff generally is very good and my preference is to listen to the better stuff and comment. I'm not as polite telling someone to tune their guitar!... so I pass on those.

Lol. No, no, no, I didn't take anything you said as an attack or anything. I didn't mean to come off as defensive. I said that you mostly nailed it. I was just telling you what I was working with. It's tough when everyone tracks at different levels and stuff. We each do our parts pretty much blindly and try to make it all fit at the end. I was serious about you mixing it if you wanted to give it a try. Ray usually mixes our stuff and it gets sent out for mastering. I did this one because his computer crashed on him.
 
See what this does for your ears. I did it on cans... so take it for what it is... But I know my headphones pretty good. Really quickly done, but sounds smoother to me and not so midrangy. Hopefully not too "boomy" for you.

btw...this song has that Clapton/Harrison vibe to me, which I like a lot.
Also... if you want me to take the song off Reverbnation... let me know. I took the liberty of using their storage, since you "kinda" offered to have me mix it.

Yeah that's definitely too boomy for my tastes. The high end seems more pronounced too. Maybe somewhere halfway between what i did and what you did would work.

We'll see how it sounds after it's professionally mastered.

Hey Moresound,
I record with a Neumann TLM 102 going into a Behringer Xenyx 1222, EQs all at 12:00. I've only got a 2-channel Edirol interface and I record in Samplitude. I didn't mix this so that's what Greg and Ray had to work with. When I mix my voice, I usually use a touch of the Entress exciter, a dab of Kjaerhuis Classic chorus and compress it with Waves Comp.
 
I listened to the tweak.
I did so on H/phones as that was how it was mixed.
Interesting take on things & thanks for the time spemt on it.
We'll post the mastered version when it comes back. It may address your concerns.
We record across three continents and 4 nations let alone as many programs, interfaces, preamps, mics, effects etc. Levels vary quite a bit and each of us has some audio eccentricity as well. Add to that the 20+ guitar tracks, many with the same guitar, which stack up their signature sonic problems and you'll get why there was a need to deal with the bottom end as was done.
I'm more than happy with Greg's mix - particularly as it went in a direction I'd have been too heartless to attempt.
Joe, thanks for the insight into your process/chain. I learn something everyday.

Hehe...considering the Thin White Duke hasn't been using his voice very much lately, I kind of decided to "borrow" it.....I'll make sure to hand it back by next Xmas though....promise....;):D
