This has probably popped up somewhere else on the forum, but it seemed extremely funny/disturbing to me.

News story

Yeah, I read about that yesterday. The mic in question was discussed here not long ago, too. http://www.placidaudio.com/ They've even put the story on their website!

The most disturbing thing is not that airport security mistook a mic for a bomb but that they let him on the plane anyway. Some security. :(

I have to ask...maybe it's me...but for $250 I'd rather buy a decent EQ to force my recordings to sound tinny like that. At least you'd have some versatility in the mix.

They do look cool.

If anyone can explain why that mic kicks ass I'm all ears.

I wouldn't want the Spree on my flight anyway, regardless of what they're carrying on -- yikes!

Not so funny...I was detained some time ago for transporting a couple tube mics and their power supplies in their little brief cases! I bought them while on vacation and wanted to hand carry them thinking they would be safer that way.

No one believed that the mics needed power supplies and then they kept asking, "if these are microphones, why are they so big?".

So........Why are they so darn big? ha ha

Man that's one for the memory banks. I'll be a little more selective as to what I bring on flights in the future.

I'm surprised they didn't make you plug it in and start singing. ha ha

me me me ah... Start speadin the News....etc.

it looks cool, but....
that mic sounds downright crumby!
1khz anyone?

The Copperphone is an awesome mic if you're looking for a new/different flavor to add to your mic cabinet. It's not going to replace your SM57, Royer R121, or your U47, but it's not meant to. Not everyone needs what the Copperphone offers, but when I'm looking for that antiquified early 40's vibe, the Copperphone always delivers in beautiful fashion. $250 is a steal for a mic that sounds as great as it does, and one that doubles as a work of art - or a pipe bomb ;) .

Hear about the studio burning whiile the Black-Eyed-Peas were recording

It's that way for a reason. It's supposed to sound like the mics in use in the 20s. It's not for accuracy.

You should listen to the clips on their website. I've never been able to get a sound like that with EQ.

I did listen, and yeah i guess it would be hard to emulate the tinniness it has.
Are you gonna buy one?

It'll be the next mic I buy. I don't know when I'll have the funds, though.

I've used my Copperphone more than a few times on guitar amps as well. When used in conjunction with another mic (or 2), it can really add some flavors that the other mic(s) won't get. Sometimes when I've got an amp already mic'd up, I'll throw the Copperphone up just for the hell of it, and I often end up using it in the mix.
