I'm contemplating getting either the Terratec EWX2496 or an M-Audio Audiophile 2496... If I get the M-audio I have to buy Cakewlk too, whereas the Terratec is cheaper, and it comes with some software... Is the Terratec 2496 any good? Can I get away with using just the software that comes with it (i.e. not buying Cakewalk or Cooledit)? I'm new and I just want to do some simple guitar/vocal recording.

I would also like to confirm from people who know what they're talking about (as I'm a newbie) that all I need to record on my computer is a card (as discussed above), a mixer and a mic (and all the connecting cables, of course). Am I missing anything?

I also wonder how a multi-track mixer input into a single analog I/O slot still translates into mult-track when it gets to the software. Does the card do time division multiplexing or something? I don't NEED to know the answer to this one, but I'm just curious.

Thanks guys!!
Doug

I was torn between the two, but have opted for the audiophile.

After reading all there is on this forum about the two, the constant praise of the audiophile, and reading this article, http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/apr01/articles/soundcard.asp
I came to the conclusion that instead of having to buy a midi cable and a load of software, for the sake of £30, i would buy the audiophile, so tomorrow, or when i get payed i am going too :D

Read that article, trust me, it's real useful!

I am in the same position as you sort of, and a mixer would do the job, make sure you guitar can connect to the mixer. According to that article the software which comes with the Terratec aint 24bit capable, so you would have to buy more software. Where as the audiophile cmes with an array of titles. anyway read the article, it'll decide for you :D

Great, thanks aL.

I read the article, and I think I'd go with the Audiphile too. But one question still remains: Will we still have to buy additional software (like Cakewalk) or is the s/w that comes with the card "good enough" for us.

Let me know your thoughts after you buy it (you'll likely make the purchase before I do).

I'm looking at the Terratec ADAT s/pdif card...

By the way, doesn't the Terratec come with Samplitude? That's a kickass prog.

The Terratec comes with:
Gigasampler LE
Wavelab Lite
Arturia's Storm
Fruity Loops Express
Emagic's MicroLogic Fun.

Which is all very useful, but for recording the guitar such as in mine and Doug's case, then it's not great. Plus i think the fruityloops is only a demo version, correct me if i am wrong.

Where as the Audiophile comes bundled with all these:
Cakewalk Express (PC)
Cakewalk Metro LE (MAC)
GigaSampler LE and MegaPiano
Bitheadz Retro Lite and Unity Piano,
Sonic Foundry's Acid Xpress and Siren Xpress
Mixmeister's DJ mixing
Qdesign's MP3 player
Aswell as a few demo's.

Cakewalk being the key one for guitar purposes.

So i would say that software wise, the Audiophile once again comes out top!

It's good software, better than just "good enough" for us. hehe

I'll let ya know what i think when i get the baby into my PC (this week hopefully!!)

Audiophile 2496

The Audiophile really seems to be a good option.
No problems on a new Athlon XP 1700+ system running on Win XP. Softwarebundle here in germany was less opulent.
And I wasn't able to install Gigasampler LE up to now.
At the beginning of the install process I got the message "unable to load gssetup.dll for setup..." and the process ends automatically. Maybe somebody has a tweak?
