Howdy! I purchased n-tracks and joined this forum about a year and a half ago. Some problems came up and had been unable to
continue with the home recording project. Have kept n-tracks up to date through ver. 2.3. Now considering trying to start over with a small knowledge of recording with a Tascam 414. Is anyone using or familiar with TerraTec soundcards? Musicians' Friends has them on sale

Hi Dewey,

I started my home recording with n-track,now I have switched to logic and it's a very good software, especially for audio stuff, I own a terratec ewx24/96 and it works ok, good quality sound and quite cheap, it depends on how many outputs do you need and which projects you are working.

Anyway
cheers

what problems did you have with recording with whatever you were using? I haven't used N-Tracks for some time, but it should suffice for what you want to do.

what is your budget for recording?

Had no real problems with equipment I was using when I quit. Was just unable to spend any time with it due to other circumstances. I have a 4 piece country band playing classic country from the 40's thru 70's, some pop from the same era. I worked solo for a while with drum machine and harmonizer, but I prefer live music. I'm 74 and have played since I was 14. Still have too much fun to give it up. Made and sold some tapes with the Tascam 414. People always said they were good but that I sounded better live. Thought maybe I could do a little better with computer recording, but thats as far as I got. I have a Compaq Athlon 600, 20gig HD(which I'm going to increase)CDRW, DVD, 512mgs ram, Soundblaster PCI128 soundcard. About the only thing I have tried to do with n-tracks is to import the separate tracks from my tape masters. I was never able to get them syncronized and as I said at the beginning of my learning curve and had to quit. I guess you might say I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks. I have a Peavy 680XRD 8 channel mixer and a Peavy XR700 7 channel mixer, pair of Peavy SP5 15", pair of Sun 15" monitors and pair of Johnson 12" combination monitor/mains. An Alesis SR16 drum machine, a Digitech VHM5 vocalizer. Play rhytjm guitar, drums, bass. Because of having a band again, I should probably have at least 4 ins. Don't have a good setup for a sound studio (for the band). Have a bedroom in the house used for studio which is fine for just me, but the band practices in my shop, high ceilings, noisey flouresent lights etc. Also a problem setting up a computer there and would probably have to use the 4 track and then transfer to computer. The more I read this as I type, the more I think maybe I'm biting off more than I can chew:D Actually retired and as you know musicians are all rich so need to conserve as much as I can on a sound card and still get something decent. By the way can I add a sound card and still keep my existing one for music and games?
Thanks a lot for your time and patience. Appreciate any and all advise I can get.

yeah, typically running multiple soundcards isn't a problem, however, it can get a bit redundant since a better quality card is going to be able to do what your other card does...yet, in some cases it is best to run more cards since there is no clear definition of what a soundcard is ...the first issue here would be midi...many recording cards lack midi, while the midi on less expensive cards is usable since midi data doesn't involve a/d/a conversions..

so....taking the pc to the jam site is out of the question?

Moving the computer to the jam area would be possible but damned inconvenient. However I do have an older 166 with a 2.6gig HD, 64mgs of ram, which I could add to, a cd rom drive which I could set up permentantly at the jam site. I'm still more concerned about the noisey florescent lights (humming) and the high (10') ceillings. I guess I could redo the lighting and do some kind of baffling for sound, providing the old 166 would be sufficient for doing the recording?

I also forgot to ask. Musicians Friend has the next step up from the 24/96 I believe ews88 or something with 10 ins and outs, but from the picture it doesn't look like xlr mic jacks nor regular 1/4" jacks. Know anything about this model. It's only $30 more than the other one and with that many ins and out would be worth it if its something I can use.

don't waste your time with that computer....buy a new one and turn off all the noisy electronics at the shop.
