Terratec Phase 88

I did the search but didn't end up much wiser (might be my fault...). ANyway, the website states that all 8 ins have 18dB preamps, allthough they do not use the word preamp, preamplification or anything else in that league... Now my question is; how much is 18 db preamplification? Does it amplify a microphone enough to get decent levels?

Any other comments or experience would be very helpfull!
