Tempo fluctuations

Using a laptop with a 933mhz Celeron processor and 128mb RAM, how many tracks of audio do you think it could cope with in Cakewalk Pro Audio 7?
The biggest problem I'm having is that songs tend to speed up and slow down when they're played. Is that something to do with the clock source, is it because there are too many tracks of audio? Help, as it's driving me mad.
Thanks

I think that's the word clock talking.

What's your soundcard? Is it the built in, then maybe it's not the best in the world... ;)

Unfortunately, it's just the built-in soundcard on my toshiba laptop.
If it's the clock, does it mean that the recorded audio has fluctuations in it, or is it just when it plays it back? Could this be rectified if I copied the files onto my desktop and tried that?
How does the clock work anyway?
Thanks

that tempo problem is the sound card... even soundblasters will have it (tyically just at the start of play) I don't mess with midi sequencing much so I don't know the solution beyond throwing money at it...

Yes, that's most likely. Nothing you can do about it (except invest in a better soundcard, and re-record it as zekthedeadcow said).

So, if I copied the files onto a computer with a better soundcard would it perhaps play it all in time then? I could understand if what has been recorded was recorded out of time, but even samples I've inserted in as wave files play out of time. So could the same files on another computer be the answer?
Thanks

No, I think you have to record it again... But it's worth a try.
