wassup

let me introduce myself real quick..
my name is Andy but i go by DJ Chronic. i live in memphis, tn and i am trying to make it in the hip-hop business. i have been making beats with a video game (MTV Music Generator for PSX) for a while and have recorded them onto tapes using a regular cassette deck.

now for my question...
i plan on buying a few things to get started.
first thing is the DR-202 dr. groove drum machine.
second thing is the SP-202 dr. sampler.
third thing is a Tascam 4-track recorder of some sort.
my question is do u think this is enough equipment to make some nice beats and be able to rap on them and record them on cassettes for demos?

thanx for your input

SSSuupp DJ CHRONIC. I too own the DR202 and SP202. The DR202
is a great machine to use for creating your own drum beats.
The Tascam and the SP202 (plus a good mic and either some active or passive nearfield monitors) are also excellent choices to get you started into recording.

whats a good mic to start with?
also what is monitors? like computer screen monitors?
sorry if i sound like a fool, but im very new to this

Monitors are speakers. Not consumer stereo speakers, but speakers designed to sound as accurate and uncolored as possible, so that you can hear what's relly there and mix accordingly.

Good mics -- there are a lot to choose from. If you started out with two -- a decent condensor mic like the RODE NT-1 or NT-3, and a decent dynamic mic like the Shure SM-57, you can do a lot.

alright so i do this....

get my dr202 and sp202 and 4-track..
get a couple of mics and a monitor?
if i get these things will i be able to record tapes and what not?

once again.. sorry to sound like a fool :)

Well, 2 monitors. Plus mic cables and mic stands if you want 'em. Then you're set for cassette demos.

Maybe you should check out the alternatives to a cassette 4-track though: a hard-disk standalone unit, for example. Better quality if you have the monetary lubrication. Not a suggestion, just another piece of information.

what kinda monitors should i get?
would i need monitors if i just bought a pair of good quality headphones?

The 1st question we need to know is what is your budget????
Also, do you own a amplifier?

as of right now my budget is about 700.. and the only thing i own is this webtv and my stereo

HELLO DJ,
Like everyone said, youre choices so far are very good ones but u do need some monitors....if your budget is that small i think you should go with some powered moitors, such as the fostex ps-3.1 powered monitors. Good price , they sound pretty good, and best of all ,no need to purchase a power supply (by the way i have that video game, it IS great to make beats on!) GOOD LUCK MAN.
