i'm building a daw and i need advice on the pro's and con's of the cards i'll be useing and will look into any suggestions to, the setup is gona be: athlon 1.2ghz, 512mb of ddr ram, 64mb ddr ati radion, 2x 40gig 7200rpm ata-100 drives, the sound card are 3 delta 1010 cards with the rack a/d d/a converters, the total i/o count will be 24 analog in's, 24 analog out's balanced trs jack's at 24 bit 96khz, 6 optical in/out's, 3 spdif, 6 midi in/out's, any comment's on how to improve this? also what software to use with it, i got everything, i mean everything but what to use a primary multitrack, i'm thinking sawpro but i'm gona install everything so can someone tll me the pro's and con's of that to, also any hardware issues with the athlon and these cards, i chose this system for maximum proformance on a buget, i plan to spend about 5 grand all together, each one of the 1010's will be pluged in to a mackie 24/8 buss so the total number of recordable tracks will be 72 with all used, once again if someone got any ideas please share, thanks.

IMHO

yo.. you are gonna have 72 channels of shit, man. Why would you build a killer system then ruin it with a 24.8??? That mixer is great for live stuff and other applications where critical listening is not necessary... but a waste of your time otherwise.

get a GOOD board. Id go digital, but there are FINE analog boards out there. Do a search on "mixers" at this site and others. Then come back and we'll talk options.

Id be curious to see if that hard drive will sustain 72 tracks......

it's like this

it won't be 72 tracks on the hard drive only 24 using all the channels, the the only reason i say i can get 72 is by mixing 3 down to each bus, which won't happen in any situation but a live preformance where i got to capture alot of sound from different areas, the reason for the mackies otherwise is simple, they will be used as mic pre's and input level trim controls, not to mention with the 8 busses used on each delta i have full contol of routing options, the mixers haven't been bought yet so brand is still up in the air, but mackies are looking good. i won't use a digital mixer for a few reasons but the main ones are sound quality, analog to digital conversion should take place at only one point in the signal chain and from what i've seen a digital mixer in my price range isn't gonna cut it, also it is my goal to keep the signal as short as possible, the longest chain would be something like this *in-compressor-gate-mixer-computer* or *mic-mixer-compresser-gate-mixer-computer* with most inputs coming from mics and a few from di boxes and instrament outs. if u got a better idea on how to work this please tell me, also i hear delta is has issues with wdm drivers, how much would this affect me? so far i think it won't mean much since i'll be using asio anyway but if someone could give me a worse case on that, and is that only a problem with windows 2000? thanks

why o why do you think digital has poore sound quality? and the a/d conversion takes place at one point in a dig. mixer too. you're gonna spend a lotta cash so i guess you should do a little more research cause there are some wonderful digital mixers when you have 5 grand to spend. don't know how much a mackie d8b costs but i'm sure it's at least as good as the delta with mackie 24*8.

IMHO
