My friend has a big ego about his recordings and I was wondering how they actually are in terms of quality:

Tell me any/all input you have.

Well, "your friend" has made some decent home recordings (assuming they were recorded at home). They aren't the best I've heard, but not the worst either. The songwriting is slightly above average and the musicianship is solid. The major problems with the recording quality, to my ears, are:

1. Too much compression/limiting - These recordings are just loud for the sake of being loud. There is no dynamic range to most of them. That's a shame.

2. The vocal quality (the recording, not the voice) - Sounds like a cheap dynamic mic. There are many "plosives" and lots of clipping.

3. The EQ - It sounds like someone made dull sounding recordings and tried to brighten them up by adding a bunch of high freq EQ or applied an exciter of some sort. It sounds harsh and fizzy on the top end.

Overall, there is potential here. These recordings could be improved substantially with better equipment and mixing/mastering.

I agree with scrubs. Too much compression and too many highs overall. The distorted guitars sound like DI monkey ass to me. Turn up the mids, and do a scoop during the mixing stage. Pretty good musicianship, sound is kinda outdated (on the first few) to me, but not bad.

Scrubs that is actually my friend lol, it's not me. You definitely know what you're talking about because he told me he has an exciter, so he must be using it where you're talking about. This is awesome you guys critique recording quality, I'll definitely come here when I get all my recording stuff set up. And anyone else have input on these songs? (just wondering so I can pass the info to my friend)
