Hey, it's been a hectic year but we're finally getting serious about doing some recording. A lot has happened since I first joined this board about a year and a half ago. We're now living in the house with the Grand Piano and setting up the living room for playing, listening and recording music is a reality.

I know there were some threads on mic technique for recording a Grand Piano. Almost as many different ways to do it as there are microphones. And I know it varies a great deal depending on what you're after and what equipment you have available.

Recently my son set up to do some vocals and piano accompaniment. What he used was our MXL 603 small condenser for vocals and our MXL 2001 large condenser for the piano by lifting the lid and with a mic stand adjacent to the piano and the mic pointed at the lid. It worked pretty well.

I read a "hint" on eBay about using two mics clipped to the divider bar inside the piano. I was interested to compare and not having the clip I opted to use our stereo mic bar with two Niant MSH-1 pointed down at the sound board. I panned one hard left (bass) and the other hard right. It turned out pretty good too.

Here's a couple of pictures:

For my next trick I'll try to upload some WAV or MP3 files of what we recorded. :o
