Tech Question regarding headroom on mic pre's.

I said I'd report back, so here it is...

The NV's will take up to a +20dbu signal into the mic jack, in the Hi-Z mode, I didn't try Lo-Z, since the loading and generator output impedance all come into play, but in a perfect world would be 6 db less. There isn't a ribbon mic in the world that can put that out, so I'm safe there...

Keep in mind that using a pad does tecnically degrade the signal to noise performance, since the minimum possible noise is defined by the amplifier now, not the microphone when a pad is knocking 20 or 30 db off the signal. In most cases it doesn't matter, as the signal is very hot already, hence the need for the pad, and the noise contribution of the amplifier is very low in a well designed preamp.
