Functionally obsessed.
Hello Analoggers,

I'm receiving a TEAC X-10R from someone and I want to know more about this particular deck...

1) Does anyone have a service manual for this machine? I'm also emailing TEAC to see if they have any on hand.

2) Since I'm going to buy a MRL tape for my 1/4" decks, I'm considering getting a 7.5 ips + 15 ips "combo" tape so I can calibrate ALL of my 1/4" decks. Is it a) A good idea to do this? Is there any reason not to? and b) Does anyone know if the 250 nWb/m tape is the right tape for the X-10R?

Any advice/help will be really appreciated. I'm still pretty new to the technical side of this but I'm learning quickly, thanks to everyone's help :)

Thanks!

Darn, I have schematics and owners manual fot the X-10R but not the service manual. I thought I had one but if I do I've misplaced it....

THe Bias and EQ controls on the front panel are more or less for show...

Maxell UD-XL bias 1 EQ 1
Ampex 407 bias 1 EQ 2
Scotch 229 bias 2 EQ 1
Maxell LN bias 2 EQ 2

Not that that is much help. Also the bias and eq settings do nothing on playaback.

I'll look but I'm not hopeful on the service manual.

As for MRL tape - the ideal solution is to spend $1000 on tapes for every size, speed, fluxivity and EQ that you need.

A combination tape would be fine.

As a side note a tape with any speed, flux and EQ can be used to set any other speed, flux or EQ with the application of correction factors. How to is spelled out by Jay McNight in one of his pdf (selecting a calibration tape???)

For example I've used a 200 nWb/m NAB tape to calibrate a deck to 320 nWb/m IEC.

Hope this helps. Others may have other thoughts.

Good news. I got in touch with TEAC's parts department and they do indeed have the X-10R service manual for $16 a copy. Brilliant!

As for the calibration tape... I'm placing an order in a few minutes. Next on the list is to find an oscilloscope...

Cool, I thought I had a manual for the x-7R but I wasn't sure if the 7 was much different then the 10. Is the difference just the reel size? I'm not sure. $16.00 is not bad for the manual. Keep us updated.

Yeah, the primary difference is reel size, according to the owner's manual. The X-7 accepts only 7" reels.

That's what I thought. I had an X-7 years ago and loved it. Now I borrowed one from my nephew that needs work.
