Sorry if this has been asked before but the search function is not working for me on homerecording.com
So I've already got my Mackie 1604 vzlPro mixer and I am unlikely to get anything else for awhile since I just blew my wad on my Teac 80-8 that I'm about to go pick up. The Teac is all RCA -10dB and Mackie is all +4dB with no ability to change. I've got my Hosa CPR-802 1/4" to RCA Unbalanced snakes to run from the Mackie to the Teac. to record and then back again for playback and mixdown. I'm planning on running from the direct out's of the mixer into the back of the Teac and then from Mr. Teac to 8-16 channels on the mixer. Will this work as far as dB levels? Will there be a noise-floor issue? Do I simply lower the gain accordingly on the mixer when going into Mr. Teac per VU meters? and and raise the gain accordingly when coming back into Mackie-Daddy for tape returns and mixdown? Does the balanced/unbalanced thing-that-I-just-can't-wrap-my-head-around come into play at all or do the CPR-802s take care of that issue?
Is there anything else about this setup that you vastly more knowledgeable and intelligent and beautiful folks know that I don't but should?
This is my first endeavor into the wonderful world of reel2reels, previously been using a Portastudio 424, and I am stoked. We will be recording punk/metal and I hope to push the tape hard and get that tape compression that everyone is talking about, but don't really know what that looks like in the real world. The tape machine has been serviced and aligned by the best of them. We will be using ATR 1/2" metal tape.
