Well... I confused myself, again.

I found a decent Teac 3440 (locally), but can't recall if 1/4" stereo tape recorded at 7 1/2 on home 2-track units (2-tracks each side) can be played back on the 3440. Conversely, can anything recorded at 7 1/2 on the 3440 be played back on a home 2-track?

The short answer is yes, tapes recorded at 7 1/2 ips on the home quarter track machine will play on track 1 +3 of the 3440 (of course, track 2+4 will be playing BACKWARDS at the same time).
Tapes recorded on the 3440 tracks 1+3 will play normally on the home machine. If you wanted to use tracks 2+4, you need to flip the tape over on the 3440 and then you can record on tracks 1+3 again (which is actually tracks 2+4 ....you reversed the tape, remember?) and they will play properly on your home mahine as in

Tracks 1+3 play in the forward direction
Tracks 2+4 play in the reverse direction (or on the flipped over tape)

Technoplayer,

Thank you. On 3440 playback of home "quarter track" tape, can I render tracks 2+4 silent while playing back tracks 1+3?

Great! Thanks!

That capability makes it much easier to convince my wife this aquisition is worthwhile. (See Rich grinning.... and getting out the checkbook.)
