The first line in this post "Brittney Spears is talented." was a response to "you might as well say Brittney Spears is talented".

The rest of the post was ment to be about Taylor Swift not brittney Spears. I thought that was clear but after reading it I see what I should have posted to get that accross...

Brittney Spears is talented.
As for the Beatles/Taylor Swift comparison...
The Beatles were a marketing machine. Every teenager in the world was wearing beatle wigs and beatle boots in the early 60's.

She (taylor swift) is an incredible songwriter by MOST standards. But, if you are looking for specific standards...
Her records are selling by the millions and she is writing 90% of the songs on the album. So, I guess if the Beatles are considered incredible songwiters because they wrote 80% of the songs on albums that were selling by the millions...she is incredible by THAT standard.
If the Beatles were considered incredible songwriters because of subject matter...like "I want to hold your hand"..."she loves you yeah yeah yeah".
I think she is in the ballpark subject matter wise...so she can be deemed incredible by THAT standard also.

There were 3 of the Beatles writing their songs and there is only one of her so she can be considered 3 times as incredible by THAT standard.
I honestly couldn't tell you whether brittney spears has ever written a song or not. She is basically a song and dance girl as far as I know.

And that is a joke too, unless of course you like super cheesey dentist office adult pop from the 70's.
But yes, I totally agree with your point. Avril Lavigne has a sig Tele. She doesn't even play. Billy Joe Armstrong has a sig LP Jr? Seriously? I'd never buy any of that shit.

I'd buy a Lemmy model Rick though. :D

Dude, Me and Bobby McGee is one of the best songs ever written.

True!

I'm not that familiar with KK's other stuff, but those lyrics and that melody are classic IMO--and with JJ singing, one of the best ever.

"Help me make it through the night" did rather well too.;)

It generally comes down to how long the tunes stay out there. Like the gerg I'm no Beatles fan but I really can't see anyone whistling any of her tunes in forty years let alone covering them. The Beatles on the other hand.

Let the girl have her day but she ain't going to be covered across genres and decades the way the Beatles are.

Maybe. All I know is that the early Beatles stuff isn't covered. How many other artists have covered "she loves you yeah yeah yeah"? How many have covered "I want to hold your hand"? "yesterday" was covered but that was in what...1965?
The Beatles teeny bopper crap from '63 and '64 was pretty good as far as teeny bopper crap goes...much like taylor swifts teeny bopper crap.
Both are pretty well written teeny bopper crap.
The Beatles songwriting really came into it's own in late '66 and '67....when lennon was around 26 years old and McCarney was around 25.

Taylor swift isn't even 20 yet...cut the kid some slack. She may pen some really memorable songs by the time she gets 6 more years under her belt.

Let's have a reality check....

Which artists these days are really writting *memorable* songs...songs that will stay more than a few months or maybe a year or two in the public's ear?

Not many.

Most of the stuff that was *hot* 5 years ago from many current artists...has already been forgotten.
Music has become rapidly disposable...even the good stuff.

Taylor Swift is no worse than any of them...and she has a lot of years in front of her.

I'm responding to this thread, but I've got a few thoughts swirling around so I'll try and catch them if I can.

"Memorable songs" are those that stand the test of time, but what length of time is required? Many Beatles songs have stood the test; I reckon forty years is a pretty good incubation period. But is five years enough? For all the great songs we remeber from the sixties ( or whenever), there must be thousands that have sunk into oblivion. I'm sure music was as disposable then as it is now.

Someone referred to "Me and Bobby McGee", which I agree is a superb piece of writing. That song, though, has been covered so badly by so many people, that it is often dismissed. Curiously, the worst version I've head is one by KK himself. Janis, in my book had the definitive version.

Quite often, songs disguise themselves. I had occasion to look at Stock, Aitken and Waterman's catalogue the other day. They wrote a whole heap for Kylie Minogue. The music was arranged for the fashion of the time: dance/disco stuff. But if you grab a set of their lyrics, and play the song in a manner that reflects the content, they are actually fine songs. Sometimes the musical fashion of an era renders the songs immemorable!

And that, my friend, is EXACTLY why I love Tom Waits. At an early stage in his career, he decided that the did not want to write hits, that he did not want t become a pop star, basically that he did not want to become Billy Joel. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with Billy Joel, but he just didn't want to be that caliber of visible pop star.

So he began to disguise his songs, to wrap these brilliant gems in a shroud of sandpaper, fish scales, hair clogs and the soles of old shoes. So the songs have odd textures, swaying and sometimes stinging instrumentation, but at the center of each one is a brilliant idea and a showcase of great musicianship.

I hate to be picky but it is reckoned the most covered tune of all time is "Yesterday" with over 3000 separate recordings to date. Many brilliant songwriters past and present won't reach that with their entire catalogue.

We'll talk, when she has achieved 1% of the royalty trade in that Lennon/MaCartney, Gershin(s), Berlin, Ellington, Leiber/Stoller, Isaac Hayes/Davis Porter, Ray Charles, Steve Cropper, Stevie Wonder, Holland/Dozzier/Holland, the list is endless.

She isn't even minor league as of yet.;)

Funny, this has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with making money.
It seems like musicians are always talking about being true to their music and not selling out, that's why musicians are usually the poorest guys around.:p

Putting Taylor Swifts name on a guitar has no more impact than putting a picture of a pile of skulls or hot rod flames on a guitar.Image sells,as musicians we try to be all righteous and say it shouldn't matter, but that's a pile of crap.A fat chick has to be three times as talented as a hot chick to get a record deal.

....but he just didn't want to be that caliber of visible pop star.

So he went and became a movie star instead!
So much for low visibility. ;)

But I love Tom Waits....love his style and quirkiness.
My best friend's uncle played sax for Waits on some stuff back in his early days, and that's how/when I first heard of Waits.
Been a fan ever since.

You've also got to give a lot of credit to Kathleen Brennan (his wife). Waits started in his earlier career and wrote and performed some amazing songs, but when she came into the picture everything he does is just amazing (IMHO). I've always found that to be an interesting counter to the stereotype of a spouse ruining an artist.

You Tom Waits Fans should check out 'The Tom Fun Orchestra'. Picture Tom Waits singing for the a backing band comprised of half Pogues half Clash.

For real. You won't be dissapointed. 'You will land with a thud' is an amazing record. I havent stopped lsitening to it for the last three days.

Peace.

Oh and Fuck Taylor Swift and her stupid guitar.

Naaa...most just can't figure out HOW to sell out! :D

I mean...it's only Rock & Roll...but I like it. ;)

Right. Don't forget that she's cute too. Cute is important when you're a brilliant songwriter.

I saw her on TV last night for some SNL ad, I think. She certainly is cute. :)
