whats should my next step be... i current just have a shure sm58 and a dmp3 preamp\ going into a soundblaser...

been eyeballin the emu1212m for around 199... is the emu a good investment or is there another around 200 soundcard i should look at....

also should i go soundcard next? or get a new mic, any help is appreciated, thx in advance.

also, im only using a microphone for recording, no instruments will ever be used.

hey ritz, glad to see your interested in upping the anty on your recording gear. I warn you though, it becomes an addiction where you keep hearing yourself say "when I get this last piece of equipment, then I'll be set". Ha!

Seriously though, it sounds like the next step for you would be the sound card. You will eventually probably get a condenser mic (remember the voices in your head), but right now the SM58 is not living up to it's full potential going into a soundblaster card. The 1212m Is a good product, but if you are not going to be using ADAT (which it sounds like you are not), then I would go with something else. Similar products without the ADAT would be E-MU's 0404, M-Audio's 1010LT, M-Audio's Delta66, Echo Audio's MiaMidi. All of these would be great choices. It really depends on what you are wanting to do with it overall.

Other options would be USB or Firewire interfaces. There are a plethora to pick from, and depending on what you are going to be doing, you may want to go with that. What is your computer setup like? (Processor, Ram, Hard Drive, etc...)

Hopefully the good people on here can help steer you in the right direction.

im runnin a p4 2.4, 512mb ram, 1 internal 80gb hd, 1 external 80gb hd, i will be upgrading ram soon as well motherboard and getting another hd.

so the 0404 would produce as good of quality? not sure if ill use ADAT considering i have no idea what it is... i probaly wanna steer clear of any external product would rather use a traditional pci soundcard.

It has the same 24bit/96Khz capabilities of the others. Also consider the Echo Mia Midi, and the M-audio Audiophile 192, all would be good choices, and all are under $200. I've heard that M-Audio's drivers work very well, but I have never owned a product from them, so I don't have first hand experience. I have used an Echo Audio Product and it worked well, and I'm currently using the Presonus Firepod, and It works well. With your configuration, each of these audio interfaces should work pretty much the same.
