Is the Tacsam Video(s) worth the money? We are starting from the beginning? For my 15 yr old son.

Any other books or sources for a beginner?

Thanks.

I have a few books that would be great for a beginner that I'm about to put on ebay this week. If you're interested, I'll hold off on ebay.

Billboard guide to Home Recording:
This book is excellent for the beginner. It's primary focus is the personal multi-tracker and recording in the home. Very easy to understand and covers quite a bit. It's more like a comprehensive quick start quide.

The Audiopro Home Recording Course Vol. 1&2:
These books AND CD's are great for a beginner because of the audio examples.

Practical Recording Techniques:
This book is used as the text at a lot of recording schools. It's pretty comprehensive and can be applied to the beginner and home recordist. It's probably not the best book for quickly getting up and going, but it's an excellent resource for any recording questions.

You could search the term "video" on that forum for more info.

In the book department, there's a book by Peter (? I think Peter) McIain that I thought was pretty good. "Using your Portable Studio" or something similar.

(I haven't ever seen one of the videos in question myself, so I have no first-hand information.)

I bought the first video from MARS music for $25. The production is pretty good showing one guy working a 424 MkIII. Occasional close ups of the 424 controls. The video is supposed to be general enough to cover all the cassette based PortaStudios. I have a 414 so it worked out pretty well.

Overall, the video is well done but pretty basic. If you have already successfully made a recording with overdubs, skip this video. If you have just opened the box or you are still confused between the mixer and the recording sections, get the video.
