Tascam us-122

tranks for your help, I might didnt explain well in the other comment.
What I wanna record is alt-rock music, but I use a drum machine for the drums, so I record bass, guitar and voice one at the time.

another newbie question please forgive me

I'm thinking of buying a cheap good condenser mic, the tascam us122 and thats it. Would it require some preamp for the mic, cause I've heard that when are integrated preamps like on the us122 doesnt have great quality?
 
The song I posted was made with the us122 and a Marshall MXL603s condensor mic (using the phantom power supplied by the us122)... That's it!

Sounds pretty good to me.
 
From what Ive heard the Tascam mic pres are garbage. (This from a user onthe google groups) I mean im hoping theyre good so I dont have to get the DUO but thats jsut what Ive heard.

Dont believe anything you hear and only half of what you see, as the saying goes...
Too many people give advice on hearsay and not on actual use....

I heard this one guy say once that his Corvette was a piece of junk.... hmmmm....:confused:
 
All I can say is listen to the recording I posted above. What you hear is what you get. Keep in mind that was my first shot at the thing and I'm sure there's room for improvement.

Anyone else have a us122 recording they can share?
 
I got my US-122 yesterday and without knowing very much I got it hooked up and the drivers installed no problem...

I couldnt figure out the Cubasis program fast enough and didn't wanna mess with it so I tried it out with Cool Edit Pro....
I dont really have any experience with CEP either, other than manipulating a few mp3's and mixing a couple wave files from someone elses song..

Anyway I recorded a rhythm guitar and a lead just to try it out and it worked pretty good, no latency and it works good with CEP...

I got nothing to share just yet, well nothing worth hearing but as soon as i work with it for awhile, and if I get something thats not too bad I'll post it...

Oh, and I'm using a 1 gig pentium III laptop with 512 megs ram...
 
What program did you use to record that song? Did you just use the included version of Cubasis?
 
Do you have any recordings of rock bands that were done with the Tascam US-122 Interface...I just want to have an idea of how it sounds with guitars, drums, basses, etc.
 
How many tracks can the 122 playback and record simultaneously?

I was thinking of the 428 but I'm just a bedroom player and recorder and wouldn't really ever need to record more than two tracks at once. Would this work well?

Here's one a friend and I put together this past Saturday. There's not drums or bass yet but it'll give you an idea.



We have recorded drums before using the 2 mics we have and it sounds marginal. I think for drums you really need a compressor. I downloaded one recently buy haven't had the chance to paly around with it.

By the way, on the song above, we mic'd the guitar amp (just in case you were wondering). Also, this song is raw, no effects, EQ, or mixing has taken place.

You can play back as many tracks as your PC can handle, and you can record 2 tracks at a time.

Also, what would the compressor do to the drum sound? I don't really know what a compressor is?
 
the compressor will tighten the drums in the mix by compressing the dynamic range.

i recommend using a multiband compressor if you are compressing a full drum kit rather than individual percussion sounds.
 
I bought a US-122 some weeks ago to be able to take my work/hobby with me and i must say that i am VERY pleased with the sound of the unit.

Here in the studio i have a Layla24 and a MOTU2408Mk2 and i must say it really compares wonderfully to the two ( even thru the same monitors and aplifier)...

Didn't try the MIC preamps yet but i will soon.

Low latencies and no crashes even after a whole days messing with VSTis and audio...

And most of all it does not require an external power supply, so i could record in a garden!!

Just got mine yesterday for use in Sonar2.0XL on a laptop. Very easy to install. All I've done thus far is headphone monitoring, which is fine. Have not put it through its recording paces yet. I will try to post impresions, results shortly.
