Very similar external soundcards. The tascam is USB while the Presonus is firewire. I'm using these purely so i can mix down (using hardware) onto my computer. Thus I only need two tracks and all that really matters is the quality of the converters. I highly doubt I will ever use them for recording straight to the computer. I was considering getting the M-Audio 2496 but i'm not thinking I might throw out my last piece of Microsoft technology (i'm a Mac junkie) and get a Mac mini for the studio, which means i cant use PCI cards.

So, judging pretty much just the converter quality alone (and their compatibility with mac's) which of these two external soundcards would be the best option?

The Inspire is a relatively new device, so few folks have actually used it. Either device will do what you want. I own the US-122 (and it's good), but for what you're doing, I might go with the Inspire.
