I have just bought a second hand Tascam 424 Porta Studio, but it hasn't any instructions. I know the basics of recording and have made some demos, but are there any tips or tricks I would have known had I had an instruction manuel, or is there aby tips and tricks that any veteran Porta studios know?

Also can I plug another 424 into the porta studio to make an 8 track?

Sorry but no.

Yo Mathews in the PUB:

You can get TEAC on line and perhaps get a free download of the manual. Then, again, it might not be free. But, it won't hurt to look and see.

I'll have a laphroaig neat.

Green Hornet :D :p :p

:D If yours is the original 424, I have a manual if you want to pay for copying, postage, envelope.

Nice one

Cheers for all the help and offers I appreciate it. I have however, spoken to a mate of mine who apparently knows a UK number I can call and they'll have the instruction manuel. If it turns aout to be a load of bollocks though, I'll be back.

Thanks again

Check out The Unofficial TASCAM 424 Home Page. There's a link for a 424 MkII manual in .PDF format, and lots of other 424 information and links. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't have any manual either! :D

You're a Star

Baritone Bill, you are a Star, a Gem and a Gentleman. This site should hopefully sort me out nicely and answer my questions, but just in case: I've been having trouble with recording my electric guitar on the 424, it either sounds too distorted or too clean and quiet, I just can't seem to get a happy medium, can you or anyone help? I've tryed both plugging directly into the 4 track and recording from my amp through my microphone but both sound so crap. I like acoustic guitar songs, but I don't want to sound like Travis or David Grey all the time, help!!

424's are great beginners tools. And a lot of fun too. I had one. Just read the manual over and over. At the bus stop, at home.....you'll eventually learn what you want to know. I know that's not the most enlightening info, but that's teh fun of it.

No Manual - and fluttering sounds

I've also had a hard time finding the manual for the original Tascam. I downloaded the PDF file of the manual for the MKII, which allowed me to figure out some stuff on my machine, but there are still some things I haven't got a clue about... things I'll ask about in this forum if I decide to keep my 424. Here's another problem I'm having with (copied from a message I posted as a seperate thread):

I just bought an original Tascam 424 over ebay, having been told that it was slightly used but in perfect working condition.

It didn't come with the original Tascam AC adapter but one of those all-in-one Radio Shack power supplies. When I plugged it in, there was a loud buzz on all the channels.

So I replaced the adapter with one I use with my PC speakers that I happened to have on hand, and that got rid of the buzz. But I'm still not sure if the machine is getting enough power--or if the motor is shot. Here's why:

When I record on NORMAL speed, the playback sounds like a tape that's about to get eaten by the machine--fluttery and worbly sounding. In other words, garbage comes out.

So I give it a try on HIGH speed, and when I play it back, the fluttering sound is gone (as well as I can detect anyway), but about 5 seconds into it, the speed of the tape slows down for a second and then speeds back up. And it does this about every 10 seconds.

So it seems like my Tascam isn't recording/playing at a consistent speed. I'm thinking one of two things:

1) The motor is shot, or 2) The motor isn't running properly because I'm not using the original power supply (the Tascam-manufactured adapter).

The power supply I'm using is a regular 12v adapter.

Does anyone know what might be causing these problems? Does not having the original power supply cause these kind of problems?

Thanks,

RA Makaila
