Update; Bought a pair of these mics. For the money, these are fantastic. I bought them as overhead drum mics, but haven't been able to get the time to test them on my kit yet. What I have had time to do was to use one to mic up my Marshall Class 5 head thru it's mate cabinet, the Marshall with the 10" Celestion.
With the amp controls all at about 12oclock, including the volume, and a standard 16 ohm attenuator inline, which also, I have set at about 12 oclock. I have the cabinet in my double wide, (but shallow) closet, with the shirts hanging and clothing all in it. I have two soft baffles near the cabinet and the Tascam mic placed 33" from the cone, with the pop filter installed. (btw, the pop filter itself acts nicely as a protective measure against accidental bumping or dropping of the mic)
For now, I kept the pad and the roll-off on the mic, dis-engaged, so it's as it ships. Running the Tascam mic thru a Universal Audio M610 mic pre at about a level of 5, no boost, no cut, 2k mic setting and -5 gain reduction. Strat Deluxe, middle toggle switch setting, vol and tones all on 10.. Great Tone, think Clapton, Mick Jones, Malcolm Young.
Now of course, in my large room, at high volume levels, an SM57 on the cone will likely be more appropriate, but this mic really holds it's own as a low to med-loud volume electric guitar mic, when placed at a bit of a distance. I threw some vocals at it, at a safe distance, with the pop filter installed, and it's similar to a large diaphragm condenser, and even a bit fuller than some. I'd say it's true and full, without seeming overly-colored.
Thanks Tascam, great little mic.
