Tascam MX2424/Allen & Heath GL series..

Hi Alan, or whomever..

Anyone have any hands-on experience with this relatively new Mic?
Tascam Pencil Condenser TM-PC1.

Equipment: Tracking and Mixing in project studio with A&H GL2400 and Tascam MX2424.

Intended application: 2 of them as Stereo Overhead Drum Mics, or Hi Hat and Ride Cymbal mics.

Genre: Rock, Hard Rock, Light-Medium Pop.

Thanks all. dc

I have never seen them, however where I am in the world a lot of the Tascam branded like microphones does not show up in retailers.

Tascam usually re-brands someone else's mics, they do look familiar so hopefully someone here should figure it out. Having said that, the mics they usually rebrand are of reasonable quality. I think that these would work OK for drum overheads, hats, ride etc. And working it out from the price should be about the quality of the Behringer or Rode mics of the same price group. I looked at some reviews on the net and they get a good rap, for the price I would try them out.

Alan.

Thanks Mark, I found those as well. Piano sounde nice, acst gtr, not so impressed, tamb average. But ya know, those may be compressed samples. Pretty good specs, tho, so I may grab a pair, and hopefully they'll at least impress me. If so, I'll let you know what sort of results I get.

For the price they'd be worth getting a pair, especially if the review on that link is close to right in saying they have a little more bottom end than MXL 603's which I must say I've always found a bit too bright on o/head duties.......much prefer Oktava 012's.

Update; Bought a pair of these mics. For the money, these are fantastic. I bought them as overhead drum mics, but haven't been able to get the time to test them on my kit yet. What I have had time to do was to use one to mic up my Marshall Class 5 head thru it's mate cabinet, the Marshall with the 10" Celestion.

With the amp controls all at about 12oclock, including the volume, and a standard 16 ohm attenuator inline, which also, I have set at about 12 oclock. I have the cabinet in my double wide, (but shallow) closet, with the shirts hanging and clothing all in it. I have two soft baffles near the cabinet and the Tascam mic placed 33" from the cone, with the pop filter installed. (btw, the pop filter itself acts nicely as a protective measure against accidental bumping or dropping of the mic)

For now, I kept the pad and the roll-off on the mic, dis-engaged, so it's as it ships. Running the Tascam mic thru a Universal Audio M610 mic pre at about a level of 5, no boost, no cut, 2k mic setting and -5 gain reduction. Strat Deluxe, middle toggle switch setting, vol and tones all on 10.. Great Tone, think Clapton, Mick Jones, Malcolm Young.

Now of course, in my large room, at high volume levels, an SM57 on the cone will likely be more appropriate, but this mic really holds it's own as a low to med-loud volume electric guitar mic, when placed at a bit of a distance. I threw some vocals at it, at a safe distance, with the pop filter installed, and it's similar to a large diaphragm condenser, and even a bit fuller than some. I'd say it's true and full, without seeming overly-colored.

Thanks Tascam, great little mic.
