The title says it all, here is a vid of the issue. I just acquired this unit and and new to the world of tape. Any idea how to fix this? is the reel bent?

...I guess I'm not allowed to post vid's yet, please search this in youtube to see the vid "Tascam MS-16 issue"
Thanks

Yes JPmorris! Thanks! In the Vid you can hear the tape scraping the reel. Some more info, when I got the machine, there was some dirt clumps in the hubs that was rattling around. I took off the hubs and was able to remove the dirt. After I reattached the hubs, the scrapping started.

That ain't nothing....your flanges are a little bent/warped and as you can see in the video, they wobble up/down and that's what causes the tape to scrape.

I get this occasionally with my 2" reels. Very often, I can gently, but firmly, give the offending flange a little nudge up/down as needed, and that gets it back in shape.
If you put the deck in cue mode so you can move the tape/reels smoothly by hand....find the spot on the flange that rubs, mark it with a pencil, and then take it off the deck with no tape on it, and give it tug.
You don't needs to *bend* the flange.....we're talking a little tug and all you need to is adjust it by a couple of mm.
Looks to me like it's the bottom flange in the video.

Other than that, if you have any spare empty reels, just try 'em out and find one that isn't so wobbly.

Hey thanks Miroslav, just so I fully understand, the "flang" is the top or bottom of the reel? If so, I'm gonna take the reel off with no tape on and give a firm jerk to the offending side (marked with pencil)?
Thanks

Don't jerk it too hard.

You don't want to *bend* it....you just want to kinda nudge it back into round.....it just takes a firm nudge, but small to do it. You may have to make a few passes, 'cuz sometimes if you nudge too hard....now the other side seems out...etc..etc.

Look at it from the side, as you move it by hand....it will be pretty obvious where the flange is hitting the tape.

Spent some time trying to get it right. Now a different side hits the tape. I guess if I can't fix it I'll just have to buy a new reel. Thanks for the help!

Well that's the thing....if you go too far fixing one spot, another goes out....so it's about micro-adjustments.
I've done it a bunch of reels that had some wobble, and with a few tries, managed to hit the balance point.
Don't assume a "new" reel will be perfect....sometimes you just need to make an adjustment....you can't be heavy-handed.

+1 to what he said about new reels not being perfect. Keep working with what you've got...careful, gentle but purposeful tweaks and you'll get it.

Thanks guys! I'll keep tweaking. Let say I'm in a session and the tape starts to lightly scrap the reel...something to freak out about? Is this problem pretty commonplace?

It totally happens. Nothing to worry about mid-session AFAIC. And the servo logic on the MS-16 will take care of any minute tension differentials that occur secondary to the rubbing...really nothing to be worried about IMO.
