I'm 15 years old and i play guitar for 4 years.I've made a band here in Greece and we would like to make a demo(we are thinkink only of a 4-track recorder due to the price).Would an
MFP01 be a good solution or i should wait to buy a better machine as this will last for a few months only as i won't like the sound quality.Would a Fostex X-12 be a better solution?

The MF-P01 and X-12 are roughly similar machines, being the bare minimum 4-tracker.

I think it's more effective to save up more money and buy the top of the line new Portastudio, the Tascam 424mkIII. This gives you a lot more mixer power and better sound quality, by far, than either the MF-P01 or X-12.

The Tascam 424mkIII currently retails at Guitar Center and online at www.musiciansfriend.com for $329 US, which is a pretty good deal.

Sound Quality MF-P01

I own a Tascam MF-P01 and am waiting to get a computer in a few months to put a multitrack system on it. I need to know how to get the absolute best sound out of this shoddy thing. I already have a nice audio-technica condenser mic. I am simplly not satisfied with the type of guitar sounds I'm getting-particularly the clean guitar sounds. Would buying an outboard pre-amp and a mixer improve the sound quality? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

-It couldn't hurt!

As you know very well, the MF-P01 is the bare minimum 4-tracker with no ups & no extras. It's not marketed on it's sound quality, it's marketed as being the cheapest, most low-end, bare minimum "scratch pad" recorder you can get.

In it's attempt to be as low-end and cheap as ever, the MF-P01 has no EQ or higher mixer capability at all, whatsoever, including no noise reduction at all, [no Dolby, no dbx]. Man, that thing is stripped!

Any external mixer and/or preamp with any type of EQ would help bolster the sound quality of the MF-P01, but being the basic no-frills 4-tracker, you'll still top-out in sound quality fairly quickly.

Any suggestions as to what preamp or mixer I should get my hands on to improve the sound of the F-P01? Mid priced gear is what i'm looking for.
