Functionally obsessed.
OK, so I want to get a dbx 160A compressor. It's not -10/+4dB switchable.

If I really want to use a device such as this, which operates at a +4dB line level, then will I just have to bite the bullet and switch to a different mixer?

Is there anything else I can do, short of throwing line amplifiers all over the place?

I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem. Are you using it as an insert?

It's got balanced and unbalanced connections in and out. No problem that I can foresee.

Hooking it up to the mixer would be no problem, of course. I'm wondering, though, if there will be any issues which come up in operation.

I'm guessing that using a +4dB compressor on a -10dB setup would mean that I would have to disregard the labels on the threshold dial, since the actual line level would be different.

I'll try this out later. My 166XLs are -10dB/+4dB switchable, so I'll just see how it goes when I flip the toggle.

lo.fi... I've taken a snapshot from the 160A's manual. Here's what is says and take special note of the hi-lighted text. Looks like all you have to do is readjust for -10db operation.
