Does anyone here actually have one of these? I've read the manual and still have some questions. Bascially, I've narrowed down my recorder search to the Tascam DR-100, Zoom H4N or the Tascam DP-008.

Here are my intended uses for this device;

1. My daughters uses - Stand alone portable stereo recorder to capture her recitals and theatre performances. Also needs to be easy for her to use. She is a vocal performance major. Singing is her thing, she's is not into the technology.

2. My uses - Video audition tapes - I need a quality audio recording device to capture her singing over piano accompaniment tracks. Basically I want to import her accompaniment as a wav file onto the recorder and then record her voice on another track. I want these track to remain separate for later mixing and syncing with a video.

After reading the Zoom H4N manual, it appears to do everything I want. On the other hand, the Tascam manual for the DR-100 is either cryptic or doesn't do what I need. So here are the questions for DR-100 owners.....

1. Is there any way to do Autopunch IN/Out? I'm not seeing a civilized method of doing this.
2. I see you can only record two tracks at a time. But can you record just one? Can all 4 tracks be mono?
3. Can I import a stereo wav file accompaniment to tracks 3 & 4 and then record her voice to track 1?
4. Can you copy tracks?
5 Effects?

Why don't I just buy the zoom? Well, I happen to like Tascam products. I have a PS5 which is great except for the complexity and the fact that it can only export mixed down mp3's. The DP-008 is still a contender here. It's cheap, outputs wav's and does most of what I want. It has reverb, but no effects and unfortunately Punch In/Out is accomplished by foot switch (like doing brain surgery with a hatchet). I emailed Tascam about future firmware upgrades to add Autopunch to the DP-008, but they didn't answer.

I have used both and although I do not know if the Tascam can do the above. I really did not like the Tascam do to a hiss when recording with external mics. The Zoom does not have this hiss.

The Tascam with the built in mics sounds great if you are close to the source.

I had to sell them off to buy a quality deck. I bought a high end Fostex FR2 for 550.

You may want to look at the Fostex F2 LE I saw one the other day sale on Ebay for 329.

It is better then the Zoom or the Tascam.

Just my opinion.. But the only thing I was unhappy about the Tascam was the external mic recording. Other then that it is good.

As fpor all tracks being mono like seperate tracks. i don't think so. I think it only let me record to two stereo tracks. Then I had to separate the audio in Adobe isolating the right and left tracks.
