I have a TASCAM DP-004 Digital 4-track Recorder and would like to hook up the Behringer C-1 Studio Condenser Microphone. It requires phantom power. The Tascam does not have phantom power however. Could I use the Behringer MIC100 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier with Limiter to get around this? How is the pre amp powered? Will it work to hook up the mic to the preamp to the recorder? Thanks.

Graeme,
I can't help with the connection question, since I have not had experience with the Tascam. I could not download the manual for the Behrry 100. But, looking at the picture on their website, I see that it is powered by a 9vAC, 1.3A wallwart.

Sorry- that wasn't everything you were looking for. However, the owner's manuals will probably tell you if you have a balanced, 1/4" TRS Line output, on the Behrry, that can feed a balanced, 1/4" Line input, on the Tascam.

Thanks for the reply. I found that the Behry has a balanced 1/4" TRS Line Out, but the Tascam has an unbalanced 1/4" Line In. Does that mean they will not work?

It makes a difference, but it will work OK.

Yeah, it will work. It will just unbalance the signal. You lose about 6db, which is no big deal. You're already talking about 2 preamps, so making up the lost gain is the least of your problems. Your bigger problem is likely to be raising the noise floor by adding another preamp to the signal chain. It seems to me the simpler and more cost effective solution is just to use a phantom power supply, such as:

If all you need is phantom power, why add another preamp? Besides, that's a real small unit, and keeps your setup very portable.
