hi all . new here and almost new to recording. for price and features i was thinking of going with a tascam dp-02. i am wondering if this is at all decent and if there is any kind of pc programs it will work with for editing and such? i have cubase software that came with a zoom g9.2tt effects processor.however i tried to install it today and am having some issues with registration and it does not work at this time. thanks

I just purchased a DP-02 from ebay and trying to learn myself. I think I may invest in there tatorial. Or If anyone knows were some free online training can be located.

thanks. can i transfer songs to pc and will they work with cubase?

also i hear that the mic preamps on a dp-02 are weak and sound volume is low.any more word on that?does one need a special pre amp for it?or could i use something like a boss gt-8 effects processor in front of it?maybe there is something in similar price range that has better pre amp? i like the idea of onboard cd and hard drive.

You shouldn't have any issue with transferring .wav files into cubase. The preamps on the DP02 leave something to be desired with many mics but for direct or line recording you will be fine. Using a mic pre even an inexpensive one like an ART Tube MP will most often have some sonic benefits of adding some warmth and detail that may be lost using the Tascam inputs.

Chances are that I said that the mic pres on the DP-02 are weak, and they are, but still workable. I was trying to use a Shure SM7b in front of it and it was a no go. Keep in mind that most things will buckle under the gain requirements of an SM7b. However, a 57/58 or most dynamic mics should be just fine. I've used some low end Audio Technica mics with it and it sounded great. Test it out with what you have and then you can make the decision on whether or not you need the additional external mic pre or not.

There is one HUGE "gotcha" with transferring back and forth between the PC and DP-02: not so much going to PC, but if you copy something back over to the DP-02 from the PC, you HAVE TO MAKE SURE

If you are using a Shure SM7b with the DP-02, they will suck. No two ways about it. Not enough input "oomph" for that mic. Otherwise, almost every other mic out there should be alright, depending on what exactly you are recording. Give it a shot and make your own decision if you think it needs an external pre or not.

DP-02 to PC: no big deal. PC to DP-02 for importing into song: MAKE SURE THE WAV FILES ARE 44.1/16 MONO, or else you will be banging your head and cussing all day trying to figure out why it won't work. That one has bitten many people in the butt, including myself.

The DP-02 is a great unit and works well. Once you figure out all of the features and functions, it makes it easy to record and not "get in the way". Experiment. Enjoy!
