Tascam 788 users, Compression ?, 8 channel or stereo bus when Mastering?

In the past I've always used the 8 channel mode, thinking that it would give me more control during mastering for the individual tracks. (It probably does.)

However, someday this machine will go to the big recycle bin in the sky. At that point a DP24 would probably take its place.

(Correct me if I'm wrong) The DP 24 does not offer individual compressors for each track/channel on mixdown/mastering. Instead, they give you a stereo multiband compressor on the stereo bus.

Do any of you that have gone from the 788 to a DP24 (or similar) miss the 8 channel compressor?

Here's what I've tried lately with the 788.
1) Use a wee bit of compression/limiting when recording all tracks, to safeguard against any radical peaks that might try to sneak through. In other words, get something recorded reasonably well to start with.
2) When Mastering/Mixing: Use the stereo bus mode for compression to limit the overall peaks, and also to get a bit more level on the final mix.

How do you guys work?
Thanks in advance.
