Tascam 488 recording drums in stereo

I bought a 488 a while back, and have been trying to figure out the beast way to record and play back and mix down stereo drums on it. I have a dr770 which I have hooked up in stereo to tracks one and two as left (1) and right (2). When recording, i pan set the pots hard to thier respective sides, left for one and right for 2. It sounds good, but am I doing this rigth? I have used this machine multiple times, and a 424 for a year now, and I never really put too much thought into the pan posistion when laying the tracks, like mono bass or vocals, I usually keep it right in the middle of that track. How does all this work. please help me.,

You are correct

You're doing it right: tracks 1 and 2 panned hard left and right, respectively. That's how I always did it, too. The results should indeed be in stereo.
