TASCAM 488 MKII will not play or record

Hello,

My TASCAM 488 MKII is not allowing me to play or record for some unknown reason. The mixer side of things appear to be functioning fine. No unusual hums or other noises. The tape unit allows me to fast forward and rewind but that's it. I've tried different tapes with the same results. When I press PLAY, the mechanism starts to move into the tape but then backs out. The PLAY light goes on and then off as the mechanism goes in and out. Again, everything (that I've tested) but the PLAY and RECORD functions are accessible.

If anyone can share an idea of what might be happening or what to check for, I thank you very much for your input.
 
same problem

i have a 488 that is doing the same thing. did you ever figure out what the problem was? thanks.
 
Capstan belt -most likely, or capstan motor.The deck has a tape motion sensor.If the tapes not moving, it stops.The FFD/RWD functions use a different,(reel),motor.
