Like the recording newb I am, I bought a Tascam 488 without knowing much about it! Do I need an external master recorder? I think the obvious answer is yes, but what one - like a USB one or an analogue one?

Depends on... if you want to mixdown to digital or analog.
I usually mixdown to a type IV metal bias cassette in a tape deck that lets you record on metal bias tapes.
You can grab yourself a decent deck for cheap these days.
If you want to mixdown straight to digital,..you can go right into your interface> into your computer>into DAW or grab a stand alone cd burner. I mainly keep all my mixes on cassette unless recorded on open reel...but that it just my preference, others may tell you differently.
You'll have to find out what is right for your needs, and what you think sounds good to your ears.
The 488 is a badass recorder, good luck with it.
