Tascam 488 Manhandling my tapes

I used my recorder (488) about five times, and then all of the sudden it stopped working. The tapes won't rewind, fastforward or anything, and after attempting to perform any of these functions, the tapes come out messed up. If anyone knows what I could do, please help me out.
