I'm not a YO-YO,..
but,..have you tried a different RCA cord? If you have a cheapo type,..it could be shot.
You said you've tried all the function buttons? All of them?
Have you read your manual?

I don't think it's the cable since he can hear the other tracks.

When you say you can hear it back through monitor . . . do you mean that you can hear it back on the tape cue but not through your main output? If so, check to see that your routing is correct. By that I mean; check to see that if you sent it to outputs 1/2 that you are using the faders for this buss, not 3/4. Make sense?

Well then,..Maybe I am a YO-YO!:D:p;)

I've only stated this,..because I've had a similar problem in the past on my 488mkII, and there was nothin' wrong with my recorder, or the settings.
I wasn't getting any signal onto my mixdown deck from track one, but it would track fine.
When, I switched out the rca cord, everything was fine.
Sounds weird, but true.
Just figured I'd throw that out there, cuz ya never know.

I've heard of people losing tracks if they bounce on adjacent tracks,..though I do not know how true this is, due to the fact I've never
experienced it myself. I don't know if you bounced (ping-pong) or not,..but,..maybe somethin' to look into if you did.
Once again, I do not know how true this is.

I have a 488 as well. - have you checked that the pan is back on center - if you recorded it with the pan to "even" as recomended it might have an effect on that - also the tape cue (very top of the unit) should be all the way over to the left - then the fader should work. also you could check the line path for being connected correctly.
I apologize if you've already checked these basics- and come off sounding patronizing-

THANKY'ALL FOR YOUR INTREST & HELP...
DON'T USE COMPUTERS TOO MUCH SO FORGIVE MY DUMB TYPESTYLE

NOW I'VE BEEN USING TASCAMS FOR PROBLY 15YEARS, MAINLY 414.S, BUT ONLY EVER HAD ONE MANUAL (IN FRENCH - I DON'T SPEAK IT) SO A LOTTA THIS STUFF I JUST KNOW HOW TO DO IT, RATHER THAN HOW IT WORKS...SO DON'T WORRY ABOUT SOUNDING PATRONISING...WITH THAT IN MIND...

YES - 'can hear it back on the tape cue but not through main output' - CORRECT... SO DON'T THINK IT'S A CABLE THING...

ABOUT - 'By that I mean; check to see that if you sent it to outputs 1/2 that you are using the faders for this buss, not 3/4. Make sense?' -
-WHEN I USE THE TAPE CUE MONITOR FADER FOR 2( ACTUALLY A KNOB, NOT A FADER) THEN I CAN HEAR IT ON 2 SO DON'T THINK IT'S THAT...? I CAN SEE THAT THE RECORDING'S IN THERE BY THE LIGHTS ON THE METER DISPLAY N'ALL...

'check the line path for being connected correctly' ? SOZ - DUNNO WHAT Y'MEAN HERE ..THANKS

ANY OTHER IDEAS APPRECIATED
